Water pump keeps going off

    Hi...

We have a water pump in the attic that keeps coming on every 3 to 4 minutes even though no taps or showers are running downstairs.
It's driving me mad because it's right above my bed and the noise would wake the dead!!
I've taken to turning it off at night to get some sleep.
    It only has 3 buttons...

On, off and reset and I've tried resetting it but no dice.

Anyone have any idea why it would do this? No taps are leaking, toilets aren't being flushed or showers are not dripping/running.

    Cheers.

It sounds like you must have a negative head pump - a pump with a small pressure vessel included.

    From the Stuart turner website:
My Universal pump keeps turning on and off on its own. How can I fix this?

Check for any visible leaks in the system. Check the tap washers and pipe joints etc.
If there are no visible signs of leaks in the system, you will have to shut both hot and cold isolation valves on the outlet side of the pump.
You will have isolation valves on the flexible outlet hoses or local to the pump on the system.
If the pump continues to cycle when both valves are shut, then the NRV's (non return valves) are leaking.

    Two most likely causes;
    * A Defect in the pressure or flow sensing apparatus on the pump itself. What kind of pump is it?
    * A leak or new use of water that you haven’t identified. (Probably less likely than above, given length of time involved, frequency of starts and the checks you have already carried out.)

worth adding that it would not necessarily need to be a negative head pump.
The advice provided is particular to a very specific model.

I had this issue. The problem turned out to be with one of the toilets and they had to fix the leak

Had a similar issue with our pump. Turned out to be a dodgy ballcock in the cistern.
