Coolant level drops within 2 days

    Hi there,

    I have a Ford S-Max Diesel (Year 2009)

If I fill the coolant/antifreeze reservoir, it will drop well below the minimum level marker within 24 hours.

However, there will still be coolant visible where the neck of the reservoir narrows. Say three inches below the minimum level marker.

Hence there is still a limited supply of coolant at the lower end of the reservoir.

We are having no issues with the temperature gauge. It is normal.

Could anyone suggest what might be wrong? I'm guessing there might be a crack at the higher level of the reservoir or similar.

For expansion bottles do crack plus the cap can fail.

Is it 1.8 tdci? The thermostat housings on the front of the engine do leak on that engine. Plus the steel coolant pipe that goes around the back of the engine.

could be head gasket,i had a fiesta that was losing water mysteriously and if never over heated on temp gauge.as long as you kept a eye on the water tank.
it started out losing water slowly for ages, then came to a stage where you just had to keep a check on the water tank and in the end it became ridculous as in if you only went a few miles the water tank would be empty plus the cost of coolant every time.so turned out the head gasket and also it had warped the head of the engine block probaly cause it was going on so long and only really became a problem when it stuck its self out.cost was 600 euros labour included.car is flying now.
hope this is not your problem, but im only pointing out i had similar issue to you.

Yes, it is indeed a 1.8 tdci.

It hasn't been driven much since the lockdown.

I guess I need to bite the bullet and get it looked over.

Thanks for the insight. The car is approaching its 12th birthday and it has been a money pit over the years.

I hope it is something simple that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
