Good morning guys - looking for some advie.

My MK6 VWGolf has 4 red rear lights - 2 on the body and 2 on the tailgate.
One of the tailgate lights is flickering on and off - changed the bulb - no difference.

If i remove the bulb and its counterpart on the other side i still have 2 rear lights on the body but i get a yellow warning light on the dash

My NCT is this evening - will the yellow warning light be a fail ?

Also if anyone has any idea what the issue is in the first place i would be most grateful.

    Thanks

    R

Flickering lights usually mean poor electrical contact. Check and clean the contacts for the tailgate. Or, if those lights are fed by wire check the run into the tailgate for wear.

AFAIK the dashboard warning is not a fail, a previous car I put through several NCTs had the yellow light fault warning permanently on and always passed.

You will definitely fail due to the flickering tail light and also if you just remove the faulty one leaving the tail lights asymmetrical. On another car I replaced a damaged rear light cluster with a spurious part which looked the same but had different internal segments so the tail lights illuminated slightly different shapes, it passed a few years but was then failed.

    THanks guys

Im going to remove both rear tailgate bulbs and hope that the warning light on the dash and the fact that two of the 4 rear lights are not working will not cause an issue.

    Thanks

    That’s what I’d do anyway.

Are they LED lights or actual bulbs?

Just google "headlight alignment in <your location>

Headlight alignment is quick and easy, pay €20 - €25 tops.

The bulb holders give trouble in the Mk6 tail lights, it's generally the ones in the bootlid, not in the quarter panel that give trouble. They are cheap, genuine ones are around €15 but would really only be a main dealer part.

Swap the bulb holder left to right if possible to test if the fault follows it.

Some VW lights only work when the bootlid is closed too so when testing make sure the bootlid is closed.
