Jobseekers allowance and turning 25

Hello just wondering if anyone could help me. I am 24 and have had to recently apply and just got approved for jobseekers allowance. I get less than €20 as my parents where means tested (which is ridiculous for a 24 year old in my opinion) and on the sheet it said my personal rate is €112 and that when I turn 25 I will be entitled to the full personal rate of €112. Now this confuses me as everywhere I look online it says that when you turn 25 you are entitled to the €203 a week so I don’t understand why it says I’ll be entitled to the €112. Any input would be much appreciated as I turn 25 in a week’s time and with the lockdown and lack of job prospects at the moment I am getting worried.

Hi, you are correct re turning 25 and entitlement of €203, this issue has come up before, when you turn 25 You have to have to ask for your claim to be reviewed, Im guessing your iving with parents? in essence your parents income is no longer assessed as part of the means testing when you turn 25. Unfortunately there's little you can do unless there's a change in parents financial circumstances. If you were say renting and not living at home your entitlement would be more but then again, your outgoings would be much higher.

    good luck

Thank you so much for the response I genuinely appreciate it. Sorry i am just slightly confused by your answer, do you mean that on my birthday next week I will have to get in contact with social welfare to re-assess my claim and that then I should receive the €203 p/w or will they still keep my parents income into consideration because I applied when I was 24 and only give me the rate of €112?
    Thank you

Hi, means testing is how your payment is assessed and if your under 25 your parents income is taken into account (assuming you are living at home. If your under 25 and renting etc, not living at home obviously different assessment and rent etc taken into consideration but obviouslyiving expenses greater.

But the crucial point is, when you turn 25, regardless of your living arrangements, your parents income is no longer considered as part of the means test even if living at home, in essence you are means tested on your own circumstances and minimum weekly rate is €203

I've advised to others on this subject and SW don't automatically change your rate on birth date, it's up to a claimant to follow this up.

So, I would recommend after your birthday, get in touch with your local Intero Centre to have your payment reviewed based on your age. IT'S IMPORTANT NOT TO CLOSE YOUR CLAIM, YOUR SEEKING A REVIEW.

You will have to supply usual info, ID, Financials etc and may require a face to face interview.

Check this link rates of payments section and good luck
