Chimney Breast Removal

We have two chimneys on our house, one for the main fireplace and one that used to connect to the boiler in the kitchen. Once we had the boiler upgraded to a modern condensing boiler it negated the need for that chimney and it was sealed up in ensuing kitchen works (and capped).

We are considering having the chimney breast in the bedroom removed for a couple of reasons. I contacted one company who advertising as specialising in it and they said they'd need to do a (paid) survey to see if it's structurally sound and to price the job.

Anyone any experience of undertaking this job? It is worth looking at engaging a structural engineer or paying for that survey? or is this something relatively straightforward that any builder could do?
