He’s just taken the lens off and still has the bulb?

Tape would probably get it through a test but not sure you’d pass on a retest for that specific fault.

I had a similar problem on an old volvo where someone had hit my wing mirror and broke a little piece off. The indicator light on it still worked fine but a chunk was missing from casing and at the time a family friend who previously worked at an nct centre, told me it would fail for having a sharp edge ( where chunk was missing). He told me to tape over the sharp part and it will pass no problem, so i did that and it did pass. Maybe thats the problem here?

If i were in nct tape on it would fail again sorry to say, working non cracked lights/lens are what they look for and would be a fail. The car has no side indicator working as will fail, other cars have wing indicators which also need to work.
Lost count on how many vws have failed on mirror indicators and needing replacement fitted to pass.

Just to mention we had put the special tape red-orange-clear over a cracked repaired rear lens and they still failed it.Light emitting was the same but they still failed it.

Broken lenses fail because jagged edges is a hazard to pedestrians.
With tape it can get you through the test, if lamp still works and can be seen properly.

So he's now missing a side repeater and a wing mirror and he thinks it will pass??

Left hand mirror is something i would miss as its needed, did you not see the cyclist on your inside blindspot now?
Serious accidents waiting to happen in the near future, ring up Hyundai for price of part.

All this hassle, be easier to fix the car properly. It's not like it needs an engine rebuild or something, it needs an indo lamp, this is a good case of why the NCT exists IMO. Lads would rather do anything than spend a few bob to fix the car properly, if he won't buy a light for it, i'd say the car see's no general maintenance.

As far as im aware, it's regulation that you need an indicator repeater on the sides of the car in addition to the ones in the head and tail lights. This is usually in the front wing or wing mirror.

If the lamp is not working, covered up or missing, that's a fail. It needs a working, undamaged lamp in place to pass. It isn't like an addition driving lamp like a front fog where if it's cracked or not working, you can can cover it or remove it and pass.

Tl;dr, it needs a working lamp to pass.

Plenty of people out there with the opinion that if I remove it, it can’t be failed.

That dossn't mean they are correct.

The NCT manual is very clear. If it's fitted as standard equipment, it must be there and it must be working.

Well that’s what I meant, they think if they remove it , it can’t be failed.

The light still worked, was visible, just had a sharp part where a piece of the casing had broken and fallen out along the bottom just under the lens. Would have needed a whole new mirror casing. I think he's a great person to have as a friend, saved me €100's, and he was right.

I was replying to the OP who’s friend has removed the entire mirror.

Just tell him to go to the nearest breakers yard, it won't cost him an arm and a leg to replace it if he can change it himself.

Breakers yard will only sell the whole mirror not the lamp which seems a bit of over kill.

Motor factors can get them, they’re not too badly priced, around €25

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭greasepalm

Last time i got one in motor factors for a merc the block connector was different and had to go main dealer as i thought Somora were okay.

It should pass the NCT if you use a couple bottles of Dipetane and drive to the centre at 35 mph in first gear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 510 ✭✭✭westyIrl

€25 from the bay, cheaper than a retest and all the pi$$ing around

And sit in the car revving it until you have to be forcibly removed by the tester.
