Hi, I have a video interview for a job with the HSE Wednesday week. I am wondering if it would look Profesional enough to use white apple earphone during the interview? I would be concerned, as my built-in speaker isn't the best and I wouldn't want to miss any question etc. Plus there is a builtin microphone on the earphones. which is handy. I have a suit and I am currently preparing my answers so I feel prepared in those aspects. Thanks in advance.

It makes sense to wear them, so both you and the interviewers can hear clearly. Personally I think it's the smart thing to do.

However there are a more than a few gombeens in the HSE one of whom might be interviewing you and inclined to think it's inappropriate despite the circumstances.

If you're worried about the quality of your built in speaker or mic, I'd say go for the headphones and don't give it a second thought.

If you're worried about hearing or being heard clearly then just use the headphones and don't give it a second thought. It's the smart thing to do.

Having a good free flowing conversation without either side having to repeat themselves, outweighs the risk of being perceived negatively for wearing them imo.

If you're really worried just mention it at the start?

I don't see how it could be an issue, nobody has professional VC equipment at home.

If someone sees this as an issue, you don't want to work there.

I use Apple Airpods for all meeting video conferencing in work at the moment, and I would be lost without them.

I see what you're saying. If I was to go the headphones route, I'd have to order a pair though.. Do you think headphones like better over earphones? Thanks! :)

I could I guess, I just thought someone on boards may have had to make this decision before, so I said I'd ask at least. I feel prepared otherwise and I wouldn't want to hinder my chances over something like this.

However, I guess it's better than like an echo occurring. From the speaker interfering with the microphone. I agree with what you're saying in your second point though! Thanks. :)

Yeah, I get you, my apple earphones are wired and they may appear distracting against my dark suit. Thanks. :)

Wear the earphones and don't mention it. It's probably the right thing to do. Some of the interviewers wear Apple ear pods or other headphones. We get people interviewing with full gaming headsets with RGB lights all over them. And civil service interviewers are only allowed evaluate you on the content of what you say not what you are wearing. They actually have a grading sheet and the grading sheet decides if you get hired, appearance isn't on it.

Run the wire up your back and then it won't show against the suit.

Fine to use. I had an interview in the summer and one of the interviewers was wearing the white wired ones. I picked a Blue Yeti USB mic from Argos recently, but haven't used it in a job interview yet. I think everyone will be understanding around potential glitches given we've been at this for months, if you make a conscious effort I think it shows you're taking things seriously. I use a Logitch headset similar to this. My career coach was happy with them.

I've been on a few Zoom meetings where people had AirPods and they were awful. I assume they work better at other times.

Zero problem with wearing earphones during an interview. The smaller the better, of course.

    Hi,

A few months ago I had an interview with a panel from a public service agency, online interview, one of the persons interviewing me wore earphones, nothing was said about it. just check everything in advance to be sure the sound is audible in them.

    Best of luck

Thanks for this info! I'd say the HSE is much the same in that sense! Cheers!

100% wear them. It's a royal pain for everyone when someone doesn't have a decent mic.

While a headset is ideal, nobody will expect you to have one, and most people use headphones day to day in work anyway.

I tested the mike and webcam on the laptop. The mic picks up the speaker sound and turns it into an echo as I assumed. In this case, the earphones are a no brainer! Thanks for the reply!
