Planning for farm shed

If a farm shed was built fifteen years ago without planning permission, is it now exempt from planning because it was built more than seven years ago? I've heard that there is an exemption for buildings over seven years old.

It is not exempt. But the time period for enforcement is gone. So they can't make you take it down.

You could be forced to regularize it by getting retention on it before they might grant you permission for something else in the future

    That's my laymans understanding

There are certain exemptions for farm sheds, check the planning regulations.

As said before, no enforcement action can be taken after seven years. However, should you carry out any alterations to the shed the clock starts again and you may be pursued for intensification of unauthorised use.

The regulations are different depending on the type of shed. There will be a limit on the size of the individual shed for example, plus then overall limits based on the total area of sheds under the different categories on the farm e.g hayshed vs cattle shed etc. That is the way it used to be.

Oh yeah, nothing has changed in that regard, under 100sq metres for certain animals, 10 metres from a road... All that.
Just pointing out that the shed may have been exempt from the need for permission.
