Car to buy in mid 20's?

Hi everyone, I'm a 25 year old male looking to buy a car, max budget being 15k. I currently drive an 08 Yaris which has always been great, but I'm a few years into my career now and looking to upgrade.

I'm not sure what cars to be looking at, so far I've been looking at an Audi A3, Hyundai i30 and VW Golf. I commute 60km to and from work daily so will probably be looking at a diesel/hybrid.

Any recommendations on cars/what to look out for would be greatly appreciated.

check insurance on any new car before purchasing. Better off at your age to put towards property, unless you are in high paying job... how much a week do you spend on fuel?

The OP is 25, life is too short to be stuck with a Yaris at 25. He can do that when he is retired and living in a monastery.

I guess the GR and GRMN are out of his price range. 260hp is probably a bit much to leave until you’re retired!

I'd doubt we will see any of those sold in Ireland.

I upgraded to my first mile muncher when I was 25. It was a gold Toyota Avensis. Bulletproof, but Christ, I nearly died of boredom.

That's brilliant advice, thanks! I'd spend 40 euro on diesel a week at the moment. The yaris is fairly fuel efficient, I'd average 55MPG.

That right there is a golden advice, don't spend too much on a depreciating asset.

Seat Leon FR, Octavia VRS. Passat CC. Something a little bigger than what you've listed, but not a million miles away.

A 150hp Ibiza FR if you can find one? It's petrol but 60km a day isn't big mileage.

Golf/i30 is a fair step up from a Yaris, what size car do you need?

That's just my work commute, I'm in college part time also so anticipate having to drive there when travel restrictions are relaxed, as well as weekend travel. I'm not looking for a big car, hatchbacks seem to suit me more than saloons.

Will have a look at the Ibiza FR, thanks!

Get 1.5 dci (megane or fluence) cheap to insure, road tax, easy on fuel, cheap to service. End of story.

Are you interested in cars at all? If you really don't care, I would just buy something cheap and reliable and do something smarter with the spare cash.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I definitely wouldn't be a car fanatic Conor, just looking for a nicer upgrade from the 08 Yaris I've been driving for a few years. Is there any benefit to waiting until the new year to buy? Will cars be slightly cheaper after being a year older?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,533 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

yes more likely to be cheaper in January. I understand wanting to get out of an 08 yaris as a 28 year old, but you could even spend 6-7k and get into something nice, easily a 2010 etc a4 or a6...

You need a bit of money aside to fix them when they break too, won't be anywhere near as reliable as a Yaris. I get the impression the OP has become accustom to that sort of reliability.

You're right, I've definitely become accustomed to it. Ideally would like an aesthetically nice car while keeping the reliability too :pac:

Do something a bit different, buy yourself an Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Before you ask, no, they won't fall apart - 140,000km on ours and never one issues, in fact the G has consistently been in the top 10 of reliability surveys.

The 1.6 JTDM2 and 2.0 JTDM2 are bulletproof diesels with plenty of power and torque. The 1.4 Multiair petrols are a fabulous engine too but check the service history, the absolute correct oil must be used on those. The diesels are more tolerant of hamfisted mechanics or slightly incorrect oils.

The Giulietta is a gorgeous car, you don't see one every day (well, I do but I'm biased), they handle beautifully, and there's just....something about them. Go and try one.
