Still OK in Cavan, along with any letter from Dept. Ag showing your name and address.

Working in hardware yard. Do be carrying home stuff, cement, lime or stuff, it’s not easy to keep car clean.

Employer should really supply van !!

If you doing local deliveries for example then get the insurance correct & being cert & schedule into motor tax office along with DOE and you’ll qualify for €333 tax.
(Email same if local office closed)
I’ve seen council look fir employer letter to prove you working in hardware yard as many abuse tax loopholes and really using vans for hunting-fishing or bling (private use only)

Very interested in this now too, the youngest has started Stomp racing and need a way of getting his bike round to the various meetings, with a minimoto the car was fine but this is a bigger beastie so a van would be ideal, very much private use, would it even be possible?

Would you be willing to declare to a Garda that the only use will be commercial?

Possibly, have a company car but could use the van for commercial purposes, that and the racing would be it's only use - theoretically if the young fella becomes a pro it's a commercial investment lol.

Wouldn’t be really delivery goods, more so for myself and trying to keep a car clean.

Well if the company buys the van it makes the entire thing much easier ............ 5% BIK on the new price of the can though less 10% if bought 2nd hand.

We have a van in the company that I can use etc but would prefer my own instead of having to drive to Dublin and back each time I want to use it.

Back to being a private owner looking to commercially tax a van so, messy. It sounds like you don't own the company so you don't have a VAT number and are a PAYE worker.

You are into false declaration territory, hauling around a motorbike isn't commercial use.

A Trailer would make much more financial sense. And no problems with Motor Tax Office or Garda issues regarding 'private usage'.

Yes, essentially a private owner, not trying a fast one just seeing if it's possible to do.
I could set it up as a commercial legitimately, sole trader etc, hauling motorbike round - it certainly is commercial use if I charge for it, there are plenty in a similar position so wouldn't be too hard to do, wouldn't be for profit though, just looking at my options - trailer would be an alternative, though a van would be better.

Would it be possible to buy a commercial vehicle and tax it private? Wat I’m looking at is 2012/13 models. 2.0ltr max, would there come in as low bracket for private tax?

They go under the old cc rates.

    710 for 2.0
    636 for 1.8
    Etc etc

Taxed privately they don't come under the Co2 emissions, based on engine CC.

The plenty in a similar position are either using work vans or have made totally false declarations.

There is no one doing not for profit haulage jobs and making income returns..... Seriously

All you are thinking of is a fast one to save a few hundred on motor tax..... I believe insuring a van without a commercial use is a challenge though.

Hi, sorry but a herd number has to be accepted or how else can a farmer tax their commercial as the majorly do not register for VAT and are fully entitled to commercial tax.

The plenty are parents looking for transport and not wanting to make any false declarations, they don't have vans, I'm not the only one showing up at meetings working from the boot of a car, I'm sure if I offered a transport service there would be interest but doubt there would be much profit in it - that's all.

I didn't say there was, just that it might be an option, income returns are pretty basic tbh, not exactly a huge undertaking, I've done it before.

Please don't be accusing me of any of this, I'm not looking for any 'fast ones', I've already stated I'm just looking at my options, I asked a question, that's all, I could tax and insure privately or go the commercial route if it was worth doing, I want to figure out which is best for me and what I want to do.

You said yourself it was very much private use, your latest commercial, not for profit spiel is laughable.

Yes, ideally it would simply be private use, have you insured and taxed a van privately? Can you advise on that?

Or, would going commercial be a better option? Have you done that and can you advise on that? It's not spiel, just an idea put out for sounding out, guessing you don't like it anyway.

You can tax a van privately under the cc rates, no problem. Insuring it may be an issue as insurers insure commercial vehicles for commercial use.

In your case there is no valid commercial use, your sole trader not for profit proposal was lunacy IMO. Carrying other folks goods attracts a nice insurance premium more often then not. Carrying fuel is also not insurance friendly.

Thanks, btw, it wasn't 'not for profit' it was just that I imagine there wouldn't be very much of it in the end, the season is only about 7-8 months (without C-19) and there wouldn't be much work for it other than that, plus you'd only fit 3 bikes in a connect or similar.

Just basing it off the info on Kerry Co Co website. It's also come up several times on different threads about commercial tax.

You're right and as usual with motor tax changes it starts in Kerry and will be rolled out around the rest of the country.

This thread sounds like "I want a big car but am not willing to pay for it".
Not paying the right tax is defrauding the system and is not allowed here.
If someone has a legitimate business and needs help with tax they can start a separate thread.

OP, speak to your employer about getting a company car.
