    Hi all

We had a leak which has been dealt with but we still have a serious amount of small flies that look like fruit flies. They seem to hang around the windows. I hoover them up a few times a day. They seem to now be every where and we cannot find the source. Does anyone know where we should look. I've moved the window box away from front window and we have a dehumidifier running. At this stage we may need to call in an exterminator as we haven't a clue where they are. Any advise? Thank you

    They're drain flies.

Normally found in drains but will also nest and feed in mould growth or wet rotting wood.

If the leak is fixed, then once everything dries out they will die off in about a fortnight as they'll have nothing to feed on. If the leak wasn't near the window then them gathering there (on the inside!) could be a sign they're already trying to find an alternative food source.

We'd a leak ourselves two years ago, well not a leak as such, but the grout at the base of our bath cracked and water was getting in under the tile and pooling in the gap between the wall and the wooden frame supporting the bath. There were drain flies everywhere in the bathroom.

When we took the tiles off the wood was badly rotten and we were met with a swarm of the little gits. Rotten wood replaced and we waited 3 days to dry out before retiling the area. The numbers of flies dropped off significantly after a week and haven't spotted another since after about 10 or so days.
