Convert bungalow roof to gambrel

Anyone have any experience of converting a traditional pitched bungalow roof to a gambrel? Seems like it would be a good way to increase your floor area but can't find anyone who has done it online.

I assume planning permission would be needed. However if you were to keep the existing external walls would you require an architect to obtain the planning permission? I am an engineer and the father's a builder so would be confident we could manage it ourselves.

Is there any reason you don't see more people doing it?

you can apply for PP yourself, as long as you meet the requirements for all the site notices/no of drawings/ scale etc. etc
    Its not onerous
