Finding a good gas boiler service person

    Hi,

I've two bad experiences with gas boiler servicing. A couple of years back I had a minor problem with a Baxi fireplace insert not lighting up, I'd tried a couple of RGII installers to get it fixed whilst they were doing the annual service but they were unable to do so. I came to this forum and got a guy who was well respected here. I don't think he's around anymore but I'm so glad he came out. He found the boiler was in a dangerous state. He actually had to cut off the supply and issue a prohibition notice until Bord Gais could come out to inspect it. Maybe I'm wrong, but my assumption is the previous service was the cause of this.

Fast forward a couple of years and a couple of boiler services later. We were away and so rented the house out for a year and a half. I got a letting agent to get their guys to service the boiler. Afterwards, I got a note back from the engineer via the agent which said . . .

"This boiler was in a very dangerous condition. I would think it was never serviced"

Maybe I was unlucky but on searching around I read this article recently. It's the UK of course but concerning nonetheless.

"I was stunned to witness 10 supposedly proficient engineers carry out a service of a simple central heating boiler, where not one completed this task correctly. In my opinion the services were not carried out to the manufacturer’s instructions and the appliance was not left in a safe working condition on most occasions."

I hope this explains why I'm being fussy. I am in a different house now and overdue a service, I'm in North Dublin and my current boiler is an Ideal.

Can you guys please give me a a recommendation on a really good engineer to look at my boiler? I don't mind if I pay more to get the right person. Or perhaps even some tips on what to look for other when getting an engineer other than just using the RGII site. I'm wondering if there are any additional accreditations to look for? Should I look for a specialist in Ideal boilers?

    Thanks,

    Mick

Unfortunately gas is not a recognised trade and there is no real gas courses or qualifications.

That doesn’t mean there are no good gas engineers thankfully there’s loads bit they are self taught.

I would try ringing the manufacturer’s or suppliers/distributors as they will know who the good guys are.

I was stunned to see the check list that this guy wrote himself doesn't include any reference to soundness testing...

Captain of the Titanic had 40 years experience! ;)

I had tried Ideal's Web site before posting this. They do offer a 'book a service' option but it's UK only.
