Suspended Timber Floor Insulation

    Hi

My house is an unusual construction as the sitting room and kitchen are built over a cellar which has an external door into a back yard area.

I was wondering should I consider installing rigid insulation between the joists of the suspended timber floor. I can do this easily in the cellar.

Would it make much of a difference with heat loss?

    Thanks

More than likely it would make a significant difference. I would also include an airtight membrane first following the profile of the floor/joists. Then install the insulation.

Should I provide a space between the floorboards and the insulation for the timber to breath?

No, insulation should be installed tight against the surface being insulated (i.e. the floorboards). If used, make sure the air tight membrane is breathable though.

Thanks for the info, Does the air tight membrane make much difference?

If you insulate the floor, the cellar will become colder.

Will this be an issue? Have you considered draught proofing and insulating the cellar?

We actually use it for a cold store for timber etc so that's not a worry but good shout.

Depends on a number of factors but more than likely, yes (and probably more of a difference than the insulation!).
