Slow download speeds with Eir

Hi all I am looking for some advice.

I have an Eir phone, broadband and TV package which is costing me €130 a month. My download speed never goes above 2 Mbps. When I run a speed test I'm getting over 14 Mbps.

I rang Eir technical support yesterday to see if there is a problem with my broadband. The guy checked my connection and said everything was fine. He told me that if I connected my laptop to my router with a network cable I would get a lot higher speeds.

I connected my laptop directly to the router with the network cable and my download speed was still 2 megabytes a second. I rang technical support back and was speaking to the same person. He told me there was a problem with my router and that I need a new router to fix the problem.. He said he would send out a new one but it would cost me €40 because I was out of contract.

The router arrived today and I connected it up. My broadband speeds are still the same. I rang technical support again today. The guy I was talking to said he said my bandwidth was 16 Mbps. He said I was probably using wireless too far away from the router. So I connected my laptop back into the router with a network cable and it was the same issue. He then told me that it was the area I lived and that was all the speed I could get. I told him I paid €10 a month with Gomo on my mobile and if I use that phone as a mobile hotspot I'm getting over 5 Mbps download.
Hot spotting off my mobile gives me almost three times faster downloads than my eir broadband router.

He then said the problem was that my Eir TV was using all the bandwidth and that there was nothing they could do. He said if I disconnected the eir TV box and switched it off my speeds would increase dramatically. So I switch off the eir TV box and disconnect it. I restarted my router and the speed was still capped at 2 megabytes per second. The guy said there was nothing he could do to help me and that he was on the phone too long with me so he had to hang up. I asked several times if my download speeds were restricted and was told no. I asked if somebody else who could look into the issue but he said they weren't allowed to transfer calls.

I was thinking about ringing technical support again tomorrow but I don't think there's any point. I'm now thinking about contacting Eir complaints and seeing what they can do. Any advice?

16Mb (how internet is measured) is 2MB/s (how files are measured). You're getting what you're supposed to.

What Eir are telling you if probably technically correct.

You broadband service is probably dependent on pair of copper wires designed for the old telephone service winding it's long way to the nearest box.

Any chance of Fibre to the home or rural broadband coming your way?

The GoMo option looks like it might be worth perusing. You could probably improve your 5Mbs speed with an external aerial and a 4G Router. Have a look at editorseans excellent site for how it works.

If you could get your speed up to 15 or 20mbs with GoMo you'd be flying with 80GB a month limit.

€130 a month is madness. You can get all the free to air British channels with a satellite dish and an aerial for the Irish channels.

2 megabytes equals 16 megabits just in case you confusing .
I suppose you are living in very remote area without proper broadband infrastructure. National Broadband Plan is your only hope.

Not sure but I think if you have Eir TV they lower your profile to reserve bandwidth for the TV. Just turning off the Eir TV box probably wont change this. They may need to remove the TV service from your account and put you back on a higher profile to improve general internet speeds.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I have decided to cancel my subscription. I will use my phone for internet as its way faster and am getting Sky TV in.
