How important are these really and does the Judge actually take notice of them?

    References to what?

When the priest turns up to the court and says you were a good lad and it was peer pressure that made you sell the kilo of coke.

Yeah character references I mean. To use in mitigation. Have been advised to get 2 or 3 but not great
    having to ask people

They can be good if they come from pillars of the community -

A principal of a school, an employer, a leader in an organisation, a sports leader etc.

    Forget politicians.

If you have the right people it can mean quite a lot

Generally they are a help. Judges like to have some idea about the person they are sentencing. They tend to lean towards leniency if there are no previous offences or if someone can demonstrate something positive in other aspects of their life. If you're a first-time offender and the pitches that you are generally a good person but made one mistake, the judge is likely to be lenient. If your habitual offender who was at numerous previous chances, a reference from the Pope won't be much good.
