Do customs officers have legal power to inspect electronic devices?

Don't think legal discussion would be appropriate as it pertains mainly to Irish legal issues.

I've been watching border security shows and see it's not at all uncommon for customs officers in Australia, UK, Canada, and US to compel those seeking entry to hand over their laptops, tablets, and smartphones for inspection.

I've been told if you deny them this access, you can be arrested and deported. Is that the case?

I'm a bit worried when travelling and was wondering if I should encrypt my drive.

Maybe erase your drive. And with it your boards account.

Look up importation of "Restrictions on the import of cryptography".

Not really the place for legal discussion. We have a forum for that.
