Hanging Wardrobe Poles from Ceiling Joist

Perfectly OK to only use one joist. Done it myself in a spare room used chains to hang the pole on. If you are really worried about it you could also add a couple of floor to ceiling studs and run the pole into holes at the top of it. Do be aware that if these rails are for say womens clothing then they could end up with considerable weight on them. I had 6 foot pole up in a spare room and my wife put enough cloths on it to bend the pole and pull it out of the cups I had on the walls at either end. You'd think you could lift a rail of cloths back up but not a chance. So with that 6 foot pole I would suggest you use say 4 of those hangers, one at each end might not be enough.

Wake me up when it's all over.

The rail will bend with any kind of weight on it. Use something like this stuff. You can buy the poles by the mtr and the fittings as needed and they will post.

Yeah I have the intermediate supports. Will be fitting one every 800mm or so. Should be fine bending pole wise. Was just checking regarding the joist as I know they're tension members really. Going to attach a 4x2 or similar along the length with screws into the joist at 600centres. And then attach the rail to that. Should he fine.

+1 on going the keeklamp route.
I did it for ~$200 and it stands on the floor and has a right angle into the wall, I can chin up on it and its a 3m span with no intermediate supports.

Even 60cm will bend if its just regular "clothes rail" quality, and if there is any kink or defect the whole thing could come down.

This is how mine looks, but I have a few "wings" added on the side to take full length dresses/coats.

You can size any of these to suit (https://simplifiedbuilding.ie/kits/heavy-duty-clothing-rails) or design your own from scratch.
    A 2m x 2m double rail will cost you ~€150

^^^ yep that’s exactly what I was thinking of. You could hang a house on them!
