3Series v 5Series

Hi All. Ive gone over loads of previous threads. Im looking to pick up a hybrid and Im trying to decide on the 330e Msport v 530e Msport.

Personal pref has me leaning to the 5series as I have kids so I guess a little bit of advice from those that have an idea wouldnt go astray.

Looking to go to the 2018/19 age bracket.

100% 5 series, 3 series is too small for families, I know of more than one person who tried one and could not live with the lack of space.

5 is also a better car in every respect.

Neither car would be really be bought as a family car to be honest if space and practicality is your main preference. The boot capacity in the hybrid version of both cars is reduced due to the storing of the batteries and a split folding rear seat is a rare enough option on either car.

I went for the 330e and have a two kids 3 dog family - but my other car is a superb estate ... without it we wouldn't be able to live the the 330e !!

aul lad has the estate superb and its a great car alright. We have a Duke and just the one baby so didnt want to have to go down the extremely functional route just yet! Was hoping to treat myself but maybe should re think that piece.

Yeah, the boot in the diesel or petrol 5 series is great - really huge, but the hybrids have a terrible sized boot. One reason why I went for the diesel.

I'd go with 530e for sure and try to get msport+ trim.

Bavaria BMW in belfast always have good spec. Beshoffs in Dublin get them in alot too.

I had a loan of one of those while my old 530d was in getting a new EGR cooler. It was a hideous car but had plenty of space inside but not much else going for it imo. Something without the premium badge like a Ford S Max, will do the same job but will cost less to buy and maintain.

Would a Merc C350e Estate interest you? Very good value in UK, similar power to the 330e and practicality of the estate might make it ideal for you.

Its not the best looking car, that's why I said look at the interior and front only.


I think you will find your wrong on the buy part, cheapest S Max I could find same year etc was at the minimum 6000 euro more with VRT included, I have no idea on maintenance but I am sure you could extend the warranty for a good few years and still have some of the 6000 euro left.


If you want a BMW plug in hybrid with room, its a good cheap choice,


It has a range of 50 km and only .5 of a second slower than a 530e.


I mentioned it, not only for the OP but the hundreds of others who will read this thread.
