Anyone had a part fitted by a breaker?

Need a cat for a petrol Passat and wondering if it would be an option to get it fitted at the breakers. Or is that a bad idea ?
Obviously depends on the availability of a decent part and a competent person to fit the part, which may be a lot to expect.
Interested to hear from anyone who has had any similar experience or even just whether it makes sense or not ?

I'd be surprised if any breakers would want to get involved in the hassle of fitting parts to vehicles. People coming back saying the car isn't running right or you broke my car, etc after they fitted the part. They keep it simple by buying and selling salvaged parts, let mechanics and garages deal with fitting them. If the part doesn't work then they replace it or give a refund.

Breakers wont fit parts, they'll sell you the part but its up to you to get it fitted yourself...usually.

Stripping parts out of scrapped vehicles doesn't make them qualified mechanics. Are you happy to allow someone who isn't qualified to fit parts to your car?

Depends on the part, if they can take a cat off they can put one on. Not rocket science.

If your happy for a scrap dealer to do that then fair play to you. Since it's not rocket science then why not just fit it yourself?

2+2 would be beyond the abilities of most of the Muppets working in those yards I certainly wouldn't trust them with something as delicate as a petrol cat.

A boy in mullingar kicked off a mirror to sell me the trim off it.

    Not mechanics

If they could put the part on they wouldn't be working in a scrapyard.

Plenty of amateur mechanics had the same idea as you, if I can remove it I can replace it, they usually end up in a garage with a more expensive bill.

Breakers fitted an exhaust for me, recommended by my mechanic, who didn't have time.

Mechanic ended up having to re-do it.

I would suppose the OP doesn’t have a lift, or the ability/tools to do it, a scrapyard worker would usually have all that.

    Not generally done though.

You must frequent very posh establishments, a forklift, hacksaw with a knackered blade and a lump hammer is the most I've ever seen!!!

Breaker fitted a bonnet for me years ago.

(he also let go the loudest fart I ever heard during said fitting,
the bonnet was fine, not sure about his skids)

I can't imagine many breakers would want the hassle of fitting parts, that's just unnecessary hardship

A lot of them have notions these days. Gone are the days of grabbing a stepladder and a 10 spanner and climbing through broken glass into a car stacked on top of 2 others.

    I think you're confusing a Teleporter/forklift with a Lift there Colm ;)

I wouldn’t let any of them near a car. But hey that’s just me. Have you ever watched any of them strip out parts. I’ve many a time had to go into the scrap yard to strip some parts out myself. All I’ve ever seen any of them do is cut, bend, brake and distroy everything in the way while there litterly ripping the part out. Although any mechanic that would be half decent wouldn’t be working in a scrap yard. As has being said by afew posters there wana be mechanics at best.
Just my opinion tho you can learn for yourself

If it was me I would fit it myself.
