Im not sure if this is the right form but couldn't think of any where else, so mods feel free to move it if you see fit!

With the world gone to **** im starting to doubt if next year is the right time to start a masters. Im currently in my final year of college and its a bit of a mess, especially with the lack of practical classes I feel like we are getting less experience than previous years. There's no point paying so much for a Masters if ill essentially just be watching University YouTube for nine months. Id be better off waiting a year so the world can better adapt to Covid, or get rid of it completely, whatever.

Ive a friend working abroad in Australia who went through USIT, which has since shut down. Ive googled around but its hard to weed out the genuine ones from ones that seem like scams. While my college background is in science I doubt I would get any form of academic training / work abroad, so Im open to general labour, unskilled work etc. If anyone has experiences or recommendations I'd love to hear it :)

I think you’d be crazy to consider going to Australia at the moment. Even if you can get work (which would be very difficult) you could be laid off at any time if local/general lockdowns are enforced. You will then receive no support from the Australian Government. I know of a number of young people who went on the standard 1 year temporary work visa and had to be flown home by their parents because they were literally completely broke!

Well the main issue you have to consider is what happens if you can't find work, there is a long lockdown or you have to go into quarantine... do you sufficient funds to finance yourself for a long period?

Have you considered Europe or perhaps a graduate program with say Novartis, Lonza, Syngenta etc...

Access to Australia and New Zealand is currently restricted to citizens and permanent residents. They are currently working towards creating a travel bubble between the 2 countries, but this will involve restricted access for other countries. I doubt there will be any working holiday visas issued this year or next.

Canada is also a popular location, there are flights from Dublin but I’m not sure they are allowing working holiday visas in at the moment.

I suggest that you look at the immigration websites of the countries you are looking at to see what the current status is.

It'd be better to go abroad when countries are open and fun places to visit! Going anywhere now will be just miserable.

    Agree with the above.

But also that this is a dumb time to do a Masters.

Try to get a job - any job - to get some real work experience here (or abroad if you can get anywhere). But live frugally and save to do a masters in 2-3 years time.

When China opens its borders to foreigners, you could teach English there. I know people who do this and the money isn't bad (roughly EUR 3k per month into your hand + whatever private lessons you can get). That's with no experience. I know a guy who only did private lessons targeting rich kids and he was making EUR 10k - 20k per month.

To do this legally, requirements are no criminal record, a degree, and two years experience (but the experience part isn't checked).

Helpful is white face and decent English.

If you want western comforts choose Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou or Beijing, if you want greater adventure choose somewhere like Qingdao, Chongqing, Dalian, Chengdu. These are still massive cities but less foreigners. Of course you could pick a small city (size of Dublin) and be the only foreigner there.

I have spent a lot of time in China so can answer any questions or ask my friends about teaching.

Why though? This is essentially a dead year now and (imo) 2021 will take a long time to get going. Surely doing a Masters now is a good thing?

Have you considered the IBEC apprenticeship scheme?

Fully paid employment plus college so you can earn while you learn. Opportunities in financial services, laboratories, manufacturing etc.

Worth a look. I believe the government announced a further 4000 for next year (not sure if its the same scheme or not.
