    Piston on chainsaw
I have a stihl chainsaw 18 years and done very little work with it, used a few times a year.

The piston is whacked and the garage thinks it is down to the fuel

I always put oil in the petrol and kept petrol in a jerry can

In some cases the petrol mix may have been in the can for a few months

Any views as to what the issue is?

I'm getting it fixed so don't want it to happen again

What was your mix ratio with the fuel;oil? Aspen might work better if you're not using the saw that often.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Fuel goes bad quickly these days, especially kept in plastic containers.
Some good oils have fuel stabilisers in them but cheap oil generally doesn't , the fuel oil mis also stratifies after a while and should always be shaken before use.
As said Aspen is a long life fuel and is available premixed so you don't need to mix your own oil.

Make sure you were running it with the specified spark plug. Mix should be 50/1,give the can a good shake before use, and avoid mixing different types of two stroke oil.

Do a vacuum and pressure test before using it. Often used fuel a few months old a shake beforehand and it would be fine.
