How long without service if switching from eir to Vodafone?

I currently have eir home broadband and was about to switch to Vodafone however 2 different agents have told me I could be without service for 10 to 15 days pending installation. I thought as it is an existing phone line and that they would be switching me over the down time should be hours rather than days but they seem adamant.

Has anybody else experienced this kind of delay? With family working from home it is not practical to be without service for this amount of time. Thanks

Don’t go near eir at all. Let VF handle the whole thing and you’ll get a date and time to plug in the VF router.

I switched from Virgin Media to Vodafone Fibre over a month ago. I maybe an exceptional case, but over a month later, I have no Vodafone broadband.

My virgin media service cut off finally last week. (Eir and Vodafone have the same setup so switching should be simpler from a technical perspective).

It was a series of errors. The KN technicians cancelled the first appointment. When they finally arrived 2 weeks after, they setup the Huawei Optical Fibre box, and then asked us where was the Vodafone modem? We found out that vodafone were supposed to post this out to us. After many promises of arriving "this week", it came in the post yesterday. And many hours on the phone to 1907 also.

But, the service has to be activated by Eir or whoever managed the network, and apparently this will happen tomorrow, and cannot happen a day sooner for reasons they cant explain. So lets see what happens.

Thanks. You'd imagine this should be the case and this was the experience of the other posters who replied to the thread but I went back to double check with Vodafone yesterday and again got the reply:

"Actually if you'll port in, our sales team will need to get the UAN, then submit an order which will affect the service 10 to 15 business days! I wish I could assist you further."

When I asked to clarify if this meant if the actual time without either eir or Vodafone service could be 10 - 15 days the reply was:

"If you'll port in over the phone, this will be the case."

I suspect the agent is working to a script or just didn't understand what I was asking but with family working from home it's just too risky to switch.

Thanks again for all the replies

Am currently switching from eir (Broadband and apple-tv for 95 p/m) to Vodafone and can't afford any downtime. Am out of contract with eir so AFAIK, I don't have to notify them. Agreed with Vodafone that we don't need an 'engineer' to plugin the modem but since them I couldn't find any details about how to get started. Modem arrived this morning with a warning on the box 'don't plug me in just yet. Please wait until you have received an SMS to let you know that I am ready to be connected'. I have received several SMS from Vodafone to welcome me and was unsure whether this meant there were ready. I contacted Vodafone support and they say to wait for the SMS but couldn't say for how long. I'll update this thread with progress ….

Is eir still working? In many cases the eir router will just keep working even though Vodafone are now your provider, if eir don't ask for the router back you can leave everything as it is.

Have you confirmed with Vodafone that the same access network is going to be used - OpenEir/NBI. This is only needed if more than one is available to you -

    https://www.comreg.ie/broadbandchecker/

If it's the same access network, Eir will stop working when the switch has been carried out but you should have been told the date and time.

The Eir router is unlikely to keep working as they use IPoE by default whereas Vodafone use PPPoE.

Here's the complaint form for Vodafone, who might be able to help further -

Thanks NotShero, your predictions were correct. I have FFTH, no other options. I was not told the date and time of the switchover. At 8:00am next day the broadband stopped working and the eir router's internet light went out. At 8:06 got a SMS from Vodafone "We are pleased to let you know that your 500Mb Full Fibre Broadband and Equipment Modem Offer service is now ready for use. …" and another a few minutes later "" Custom Account Number: xxx. Great news, your broadband service is now live. Please follow the instructions on the following link to connect your equipment. …"

I plugged in the Vodafone and it worked immediately. So I'd give them a positive 7/10 for the transition process.

PS The Vodafone modem uses LAN default gateway 192.168.1.1 whereas eir used 192.168.1.254 so my Huawei chained router with a static IP didn't work until I changed the Vodafone gateway to 192.168.1.254. The Vodafone router has lots of options (in Expert-Mode) so that was easy. Only one issue remains today, my Alpha-ESS inverter can't connect to the internet. The Vodafone router doesn't have lights at each LAN port that go green when a physical connection has been established but does show the inverter MAC address and packet count on the LAN port so I think the physical connection is good. Have tried changing the inverter from DHCP to static but no joy. Will have to dig deeper over the weekend …

You can connect your own router directly to the ONT. It's not ideal having a router connected to a router as there will be double NAT, unless you have it in "access point mode".

    Connect own router to ONT

    Select PPPoE

    Username - vodafone@vodafone.ie / Password - broadband

Set VLAN ID 10 in VLAN/IPTV settings
