Do you need to understand how it works, or do you need a recommendation for someone to do it for you?

    Briefly.
Both front tyres worn flat on inside of tyres =Toed out as left tyre is wanting to go left and right tyre wants to go right.
Both front tyres worn on outside of tyres = Toed in.

4 wheel Laser alignment has device attached to front wheel and sends it to the rear---to other side rear and to front.
Each wheel can be adjusted to align the laser in the correct setting for that car.

Bad keeping of tyre pressure and checking wear on tyres regularly will have an effect on your safety.

This is the basics of alignment, moving one adjustment will often alter the other values as well.

Just on this, have the poor condition of many roads a greater influence on tyre wear even on vehicles with the wheel alignment near to perfect?

Is the 3d wheel alignment a specialist job or is it often done in places by staff unsure what they maybe at?

Yes some roads are crap coming asunder and pot holes banging into kerbs, speed ramps all have an inpact on tyres and suspension.

Staff are usually trained in alignment.
