Buying a used car from a Hyundai Dealer - Advice

    Hi folks

Buying my first car from a Hutton and Meade soon. Just have to view it when it comes in first.

I am wondering if in this day and age I need a mechanic/someone with a better knowledge of cars to come and view the car with me?

There is a 2 year warranty on it with Hutton and Meade and then the balance of the Hyundai warranty.

I would generally get my brother or someone who knows cars better than I do to view with me but they're down the country in lockdown of course and I am in Dublin.

Should I be safe enough to purchase if I am happy with it in the knowledge that if there are issues my warranty will (hopefully) cover it?

    Thanks in advance

Buying from a big dealer like that you are generally safe enough, they wont want to be selling trouble as much as tou wont want to be buying it. Doing a motorcheck report on it may be no harm if you are nervous but other than that you're most likely ok to proceed. If it will have over 2 years Hyundai warranty remaining it must be 2017 or newer? What model is it?

Hi Toyotafanboi, cheers for the reply.
It's an i20 171. Have done the online motor check and all good with it. It's the first car I am buying myself so would have ideally liked my brother to be able to have a look for me but just can't given the situation!

I've looked at the used car buying guide on one of the threads here so will take all of that into account.

It only has 55,000km on the clock so good mileage too.

Meant to say, it's a general 2 year Hutton and Meade warranty then the balance of the Hyundai warranty so around the 3 year Hyundai warranty

I'd say , just take it. It will be fine.

While mechanically they are probably fine and you have warranty I'd certainly bring someone who is used to looking around used cars if your not experienced enough yourself. I changed my car recently and from going around a good few dealerships the standard in resale preparation of cars has nosedived imo especially from the large dealer groups multiple chains or franchises. There seems to be so much used stock rotating with these big multi-brand retailers that all they seem to be doing is taking them in, sending them to the valeting lads to stick a bit of polish and tyre glaze on them and then stick them on the forecourt for resale. Very little effort put in to fix or hide the likes of stone chips, scrapes, dents or interior marks unless pointed out to them by a potential buyer who knows what they are looking at.

Yeah, there's not a lot goes wrong with those i20's mechanically. Once you are happy with the condition of it visually, scratches on the bodywork, marks on the interior etc i'd probably work away.

    Thanks guys.
Re-assuring to get those messages. They are only a 10 min drive up the road so any issues they are close by anyway.
    Hopefully all will go well!

    Cheers again

Do you know how many owners are on it?

Hi Colm, 1 previous owner and that's confirmed in the motor check report.

Ok so no change of ownership before now?
Just be careful to check the ownership periods on the check because 0 previous owners on the registration cert means 1 owner.

I’d be happy if there’s just the 1 owner as a lot of those were rental cars so if there’s a change of ownership in 2017/2018 be wary.

    Hi Colm, thanks for that.

Date of Registration In UK 18-09-2017
    Previous Owner Acquired N/A
    Previous Owner Duration N/A
    Previous Owner Sold N/A
    Last Date of Sale 18-09-2017
    Export Date N/A
    Current Owner Duration 37 months
    No. of Previous Owners 0
    No. of Owners 1
    Colour Changed No
    Plate Transfer Alert No

Those are the details on the car check, that's all good right? It's a 2017 model car.

Sorry to jump on this but I've agreed to buy a 2016 kia from a reputable skoda garage and I'm just getting the remainder of the kia warranty. Should I expect to get a dealer warranty on top of this? Or what is the norm? I don't think much seems to be covered on the kia warranty as there's only 2.5 yrs left on it. Any advice appreciated.

Couldn't agree more, even on the prestige stock 25k+ plus there is no effort. There seems to be a general policy which is see what the customer finds and they will fix it pre-delivery post purchase agreement. Seems to be a big difference between here and UK in terms retail prep standards.

The Kia warranty covers manufacturing defects or non consumable items essentially, so the dealer warranty would basically cover the actual condition of the car, that it’s in a good state and up to date on maintenance - in addition to the manufacturers warranty,

Note that dealers warranty might cover items not covered by Kia, I think for example audio systems are covered for 3 years not 7.

Sorry they are not offering a warranty on top, should I expect them to be adding one?or is the kia warranty enough? Yeah your correct re audio etc..it's not a full 7 seven year warranty on certain items. Just not sure if I should expect a dealer warranty also?

I'd expect Kia to cover any manufacturing defects or failures under their standard new car warranty for the duration of that warranty but would expect the dealer to cover the car as per the conditions of their used car warranty where it was not as a result of a manufacturing defect or failure. For example the problem could have been as a result of neglect or abuse by the previous owner. Kia won't cover that but I'd expect the dealer to cover it as per their normal used car warranty terms.

Yep. I’d be pushing for the Skoda used car warranty.
Costs them money, that’s why they’re not giving it straight off.

Is the service history complete ensuring that the car qualifies for the remainder of the warranty?
Regardless I'd want the dealer to warranty the car also unless the lack of warranty is priced in. Which it likely isn't.
