Time for a change and normally when i go to buy a new car i'll have something in mind, but this time i'm open to anything.
I would like 4WD but its only because we live in a very remote area and a few days every year we wont be able to get to the house with snow, never a big deal, but new baby in the house now so that walk in the snow isn't ideal.
Also would like a large boot for family days and also golfing away days.
Reliability is big concern, but i feel like most modern cars are pretty reliable if maintained.
Open to diesel or petrol, dont do any miles most days, but do 4x40km trips per week so have always had diesels.
Have around 8k budget, i did see a nice 7 seater Qashqai with 4WD but was sold a couple of days ago, it seems like it would tick all my boxes

I live close to the North, but with nox and my requirements, not sure anything would be cheaper in the North

I'd not be too bothered with 4WD/AWD tbh given your need "only because we live in a very remote area and a few days every year we wont be able to get to the house with snow, never a big deal, but new baby in the house now so that walk in the snow isn't ideal"

There are now quite a few all season tyres that come with the snowflake symbol........ a two wheel drive car with those would be grippier then a 4WD/AWD yoke on summer tyres.

    Examples ........

Continental AllSeasonContact M+S marking with snow flake symbol
Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons G2 M+S marking with snow flake symbol
Michelin CrossClimate M+S marking with snow flake symbol
Nokian Weatherproof SUV M+S marking with snow flake symbol
Hankook Kinergy 4S² H750A M+S marking with snow flake symbol

    & loads more

these aren't winter tyres, you can run them all year round no problem but the snowflake symbol means they meet requirements for example German and Austrian winter tyre....... "n short: only winter tyres or all-season tyres that have the Alpine symbol (a symbol that looks like a snowflake) still comply with the new rules. German law does not refer to winter tyres, but to “tyres with winter properties”. It is mandatory to use this type of tyre in winter conditions."

    https://www.eurocampings.co.uk/blog/listing/new-regulations-for-winter-tyres-germany/#:~:text=In%20short%3A%20only%20winter%20tyres,of%20tyre%20in%20winter%20conditions.

I've an AWD thing and replaced the tyres at 63k kms with what came on it from the factory and despite them being brilliant I'm really thinking of going with some all seasons with the snowflake next time around which might well be before winter 2021 with the miles I do.

Anyway even if you go AWD I'd put capable tyres on it. Otherwise you'll likely find your AWD yoke won't get you to your house either a few days a year.

Thanks but i'll be keeping the 4wd requirement, I've had snow tyres on my current civic during snow, i've lived here 11 years and i've also had a 4x4, no comparison and my civic had no chance of getting out of my house if there is snow, steep hill and a bend. Understand if it was just driving on roads, my civic has no problem even with summer tyres, its only getting out the hill from my house.

Used to have one similar to this

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/nissan-x-trail-2012-1-owner/26049150

Veeery comfortable bus with big, practical boot. A nice place to be and quite nice to drive too. Also not quite as wide as more modern designs and therefore more suitable to Irish side roads.

Mine was the 173 ps version which cost a fortune in tax ...this one's a bit cheaper but still more than most other cars of the period.

These things are quite popular for towing and this yoke has a tow bar ...so something to watch out for.
That and the relatively high mileage would warrant a good independent inspection.

Nice car if the inspector gives it the nod.

Good suggestion, one owner from new and a full Nissan service history, would make me feel better about the high mileage, if it was a bit closer to a mechanic I trust I'd go have a look, if it's still for sale in a week I might go see it.
