Have my 12 lessons complete and will satisfy the 6 month rule by 26 December. Should I apply for a test now or does the waiting list only start once 6 months are up?

    You can apply now. :)

Thank you. Do you know if I'll be scheduled after I pass the 6 month mark or straight away? Need to practice...

You'll be put at the back of the queue once your 6 months are up, so you'll have plenty time to practice. Don't think you even should bother booking it at the moment as it'll end up as the same thing anyway

Might as well wait then and spend the fee on Christmas! Thanks for the advice everyone.

Yep, they are. I got a cancellation there a few days ago, but I actually had to postpone it so I'm back to ringing every day

Not true. I’d a pupil who applied late July. His 6months were up on 25th August. He passed his test on 28th September

Likely, he got a cancellation test as they even tell you over the phone that the tests are given on a basis of whoever applied first gets their test first, I don't see them handing out a test to someone who only applied in late July before someone who'd been waiting since lockdown began

Point is they don’t go to the back of the queue when the 6 months ends. They’re on EDT hold/6 months hold.
My own daughter has been waiting since mid May for the same test centre and hasn’t been called yet.

I applied in May and got cancellation after ringing about once a week, was getting through to same lady. Didnt push her too much into it, she was nice to deal with. Ended up getting a slot and did the test yesterday. So persistence and manners go a long way really... I do feel for the team working there. Limited testing, no new staff members, 45k waiting for their test, inundated with mails, calls, complaints. I'm sure its not a nice place to work in at the moment.

What's the best time to ring for a possible cancellation slot, or is it just the luck of the draw? I've been ringing around half 9 or 10 and get put on hold for about 15 to 20 mins, then no joy

First thing in the morning, which number are you ringing? I was calling their local landline instead of the lo-call one (096 25000)

Yeah, been using the 096 number too. So half 8 is the best time you reckon

Give them 10 mins to make a cuppa :D I was calling around 9am til I got something.

Do they even pick up the phone that early? I've been calling their 1890 phone number, where i managed to get two cancellations. Failed one, had to postpone the other as I'm moving house that week and it'd be a bit awkward to fit a driving test halfway across the country for me.

It's all luck based really I think, first call I ever made to them I got a test but now it's been no luck for basically over a month now :(
