What a technician. Look no further than the dazzling solo in "Billie Jean".

Good thing you're not giving the eulogy.

Death is sad and all but we might as well jump.

I thought Billie Jean was Van Halen too, but it's David Williams.

He did the solo on Beat It which I linked earlier

    RIP. A real innovator.

Lucky enough to see him with the classic line up at Castle Donnington in 1984.

Wow. They were really at their peak at that point.

Any man who could deal with David Lee Roth is worthy of respect.

One of the all time greats. Rest in peace, Eddie.

Just reading the news article, I had no idea about cancer. A sad loss, if a "statement of intent" moment ever existed in rock music it's the opening two tracks on the debut album. Eruption then You Really Got Me.

    Brilliant stuff.

Panama is awesome, i love those artificial harmonics he does before going into the main riff.

Playing Air guitar in the car won't ever be the same

    RIP Eddie

One of the greats of Rock and Guitar

Seen many bands over the years but sadly never Van Halen

Panama, ain't talking about love, hot for teacher and of course Jump all great songs. Another gem from a different era of the band 'Why Can't this be love'

The original and best. RIP Eddie. Probably the most innovative and influential guitarist ever. An incredible rhythm player too: Dirty Movies - Van Halen has been one of my go-to songs during Covid, and Eddie's guitar is just incredible on it.

I gave up trying to learn Mean Street on guitar years ago, as I couldn't get past the intro! What an imagination this guy had to come up with the sounds he created on the guitar. A true musical genius has left us today. I burst into tears when I heard news of his death, and there's not too many people I'll do that for.

This isn't the place to dig up the Michael Anthony files, but it was great that he got to tour with his son Wolfgang before the end. He had already beaten cancer once by the time the reunion tour happened. He had been fighting it 20 years until today.

A great album, darker than any of their others. Eddie wanted them to go more in that direction but DLR and Warner’s wanted more commercial.
    Diver Down was the result

God that sucks, I didn't realise he was sick. Hope he's slamming a few highballs and lines with Lemmy in the Great Sunset Strip Dive Bar in the Sky right now!

Girl Gone Bad from the same album was the track which grew on me over the years for similar reasons. I knew he was sick but its still sad news - he invented in ways so few have the talent to do.

I remember seeing the video for 'jump' on MT-USA way back in the mid 80's. My sister used to record the best songs onto vhs and we'd play them back at our leisure. Van Halen were like nothing we'd seen or heard before - and pretty much encapsulated our notion of what living in a place like California would be like.

    Rest in peace, EVH.

Never got into them really, but there was no denying that Eddie could guitar real good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,291 ✭✭✭-=al=-

Sad news. He really was a proper guitar hero and a game changer :-(

    Rip EvH

    1984 what an album

    Absolutely.
Although the album cover had a child angel smoking on the cover and Eddie died from throat
cancer so there's a certain prophecy there.

Was lucky to see Van Halen on their only British date during an American tour, subbing AC/DC at Castle Donnington 1984, twas some gig. RIP Eddie.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

Another +1 for the Donnington gig, despite missing the last train from Derby and sleeping in a photo booth overnight, fun times. RIP EVH

Van Halen was the king of harmonics

The greatest rock guitarist of all time, an innovator, a pioneer of his craft.

He was a massive influence on me as a guitarist.

    Rest easy Ed.

    R.I.P.
    Sad news.
He had that rare mix of feeling and technical virtuosity.
A huge influence on guitar that is still heard in music today.

couldnt name a single song by Van Halen bar " jump " which is garbage , one of those bands ( like KISS ) which were huge in america but not really outside it

guitar solo is cool in " beat it " though

Not really. They've sold well over 70 million albums worldwide.

RIP Eddie. He looked to always have enjoyed just playing his guitar and made it look effortless and he always seemed so laid back.

His guitar riffs from Ain't Talkin' Bout Love have been in my head all day and to me it seems so modern, but the actual song is over 40 years old!

Always loved Van Halen, in the late 80s early 90s I drank a lot in a classic rock bar in Dublin Bruxelles, I played Van Halen every day on the jukebox nobody else seemed to ever play them but me :)

Did Van Halen ever play in Ireland, or was the UK the closest he got? I can't find any info about Irish gigs online

Maybe you’re just a ****ing idiot? It’s entirely possible.

    RIP Eddie.
