Washing machine is tripping mains power..

I pulled washing machine out. Is there supposed to be an earth cable externally connected to the washing machine? I see a longish earth cable hanging loose above the power socket that the washing machine connects to..

The power cord will have a live, neutral and earth.

The earth you describe is probably someone taking an earth feed from the socket for something else.

I know nothing about repairing washing machines so can't offer advice on that

Is the washing machine near a sink?

As aido79 said,it’s most likely the sink bonding wire that was never connected. Only required for a metal sink with draining board.

Possibly the heater element in the machine has blown.
Reset and try again on a spin only cycle.
Let us know how you get on.

If you suspect the socket is the problem(unlikely) you can run an extension lead from a socket elsewhere and check if it trips again.
