Taking original UK car back to UK - NCT/MOT Cert

Just wondering if anyone has done this recently, but due circumstances I'm going to be moving back up north. My current car was purchased in the north and the dealer done all the necessary VRT stuff. If I was to take the car with me instead of selling (would sell for at least €1k more here and up north), would by NCT be transferrable? It was put through the NCT in October 2019 and has a valid certificate until December 2021, so would obviously want to be transferred due to the backlog on the MOT with both the lift issues and then COVID.

No it's not transferable. You will need an MOT.

    Seconded.

We did exactly this with our MX-5 back in the day (UK car, imported into RoI when we moved over, exported 'back' to UK when we went back) and FWIW again more recently (same car, imported into Lux when we moved over). Needed an NCT when importing in RoI, needed a MOT when importing in UK, needed a Controle Technique when importing in Lux.

Local version of NCT (MOT in UK, Controle Technique in Lux) seems a standard and unavoidable aspect of importation/local registration.

Stands to reason, since each country seems to have its own standard of roadworthiness.

Ah damn. Just thought that since cars being brought in the south from other EU countries, you can get the roadworthiness certificate carried over for NCT, was hoping there would be a reciporical legislation in the UK. Cheers through.

Gettin an MOT is not that difficult even in NI where you have to do it in a special centre. More importantly have you looked at the prospect of a partial refund of VRT.

Easy enough to sort an MOT but bear in mind that due to COVID restrictions the normal MOT online booking system here in the North has been disabled for certain classes of vehicles (inc cars), and you have to book by phone - they have extended the existing MOT expiry date for most cars because of COVID, but for special cases where the car hasn't had an MOT before (or been off the road) it still has to be done to satisfy the question of roadworthiness.

Once MOT'd, you can then tax/register the vehicle in your name with the DVA using your new NI address.

The question of a partial VRT refund is a good one, I recently part-traded a car with a Cork guy and part of the deal was that I would provide proof of UK registration to him so he could reclaim the VRT (the car was originally a UK one anyway before it made its way to ROI).
