I know there have been other threads on this but I'm still confused.

Could anybody enlighten me on whether it is possible to buy a Ranger (161/171 model) for private use?

And if so, what needs to be done?

    VRT ?
    Tax ?
    Insurance ?

    Thanks

You have to pay vrt if importing.

Tax for private use is by engine size so old Tax system for you.

Insurance is commercial policy which covers social domestic and private use.

So if I'm buying from a dealer do I still need to pay VRT?
    How much might that be?

If it’s Irish registered, there’s no VRT due

Even if it was previously registered as a commercial vehicle?

Going to follow this, as it’s something I’ve been trying to get answers for the same vehicle.

AFAIK even though it’s taxed privately, it still remains classed as a commercial, so needs a yearly DoE test as opposed to NCT.

Insurance company previously told my it’s no problem to insure it private, my concern is also that in the event of a claim will the whole commercial vs private use become a stumbling block?

I’d like a Ranger or even a crew cab van as it would suit my private needs, it’s such an archaic system in this country though.

I've a crew cab van insured as a private vehicle. No commercial use claimed. Always been an issue getting insurance. Current situation is that my insurance company have it classified as a 6 seater minibus and have a private insurance policy on it. I queried this with them as it was previously a commercial policy for SD&P use only. They said it was at the request of the underwriter and i have this in writing from them as i was concerned as to what would happen if i were to need to make a claim. Upside is that i can drive other cars and open driving is way cheaper than on a commercial policy. All in its in the region of €550 per year fully comp, vs circa €750 - €900 third party as a commercial policy.

It's very hard to find a company willing to quote for this though, i have had this policy in place for about eight years now and there are no alternative insurers that i can find.

Tax is based on engine size and is about €700 IIRC.

Test is still the CVRT though, which is annual and twice the cost of the NCT.

Is that through a broker or one of the insurance companies directly?

I have a 151 Hilux for private use, so same situation:
    - VRT applies when first registering a car in ROI. If the car is on an irish reg already then VRT is not relevant anymore.
    - Tax, as others said, is based on engine size
    - Insurance: It took me a while to find an insurer that would not only insure me but also move my no claims over. It worked well in the end, but I had to cancel/convert my old "private car" insurance to a new "private commercial vehicle" insurance for that to work. In other words I was without a car and insurance for a few days.
    - As other said, yearly DoE test

One more thing to look out for is that many dealers list the price ex. VAT. Obviously you'll have to pay a price inclusive of VAT since you're a private buyer.

I have a Ranger that was imported by a dealer from the UK. Its being used as commercial but when I got it I had to go through the whole process of getting it done for commercial so you may be able to get an import done as private

If the vehicle is post 08' do you not have the option of Engine cc or Co2 for road tax?

Not when the taxation class has been changed from commercial to private.
