Car registered years later

Saw a car in a dealership today. It had a 2018 registration on it, but the model of car was last made in 2016. Discontinued after that.

I presume dealer had it in stock and never sold it but , registered it in 2018 . But thing is they are looking for as new money for it.

Test drove a 2016 myself earlier in the year and it was half what this dealer wants for the 2018.

Not advertised online either . Obviously this can be done since they have the licence plate on it.

Was thinking of looking at it and making an offer but at their asking price it's madness.

    Can that be legal?

On the face of it sounds entirely legal.

What mileage is on the car?

I had an 04 car which I never saw another of, same deal I suppose. They're entitled to ask whatever they want for it, if it's ridiculous hopefully it won't sell.
What type of car is it, surprised that wasn't asked already

No idea, but looking at it (just did walk around ) looks like it's never left the place. Was surprised to see it and more so when I saw the plates

Sometimes looking at tyres with a date on them might show its has been in the lot waiting to move on from there.

    Is this it ?

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/volvo-xc70-2-4-d5-se-lux-4wd-215ps/24421033

A good bit cheaper than a V 90 but not enough to be a sweet deal.

Funny that they had no pic, it being sitting in the showroom and all.

If you like it maybe go in with a good cash offer.

I'd be more concerned about the mileage than the year.

Did you check the motor tax rate on the car? There is usually a good reason for a car to remain unsold for ages, if it's in the high tax bands then it's an unattractive purchase.

Yes that can catch some people out until they have it bought and go to tax it.

I know C5s were only built to end of 2014, but yet there are 2016 regs being driven around

It's just Ireland and UK and probably some countries go by date of first registration in determining how old the car is.

Some other countries, go by year or manufacture, so when your're buying a car you don't look when was it first registerd, but what year was it manufactured.
In OP particular case, that car would be considered 2016 car not 2018 like in Ireland.
