What is the proper way to address your boss?

I know in school our teachers made us call them sir/miss. However my mother never addresses her boss as miss but rather calls her by her first name. Even in college, things were much looser (either professor or their first name but they didn't emphasize on it according to her).

I was told growing up that you'd have to address superiors by sir/madam but that seems outdated. Hell even the Scandinavians don't do that from primary school all the way to the workplace. So why are we still doing it?

I have never ever addressed a manager as sir or madam. Even in college I called lecturers by their first name. Manager or professor there just people with unimpressive fancy titles.

Think the OP heard someone say " Hi Sir" to their boss and thought it was a title, "

I'm a manager for 11 years and only expect people to call me by my first name ,

One of my staff is actually a 'friend ' and I have a nickname in our circle however in work we have a professional relationship and he calls me by my first name and never will I tolerate /want the nickname mentioned nor does he do it , it's a matter of common sense in a work environment ,

Sir /madam is over the top, you need to build a relationship with your team and that is too formal

    First name basis is fine

    Nicknames are not fine

    Sir /madam is too much

Treat people with respect and use their first name .

Okay so tell me then why do we address teachers as sir/madam in secondary school.

I work for a large multinational. I can't imagine anyone ever addressing anyone regardless of position by anything other than their name.

Teenagers need discipline to teach them life skills as hormones are running rampant. Adults shouldn't need such rules as they should know them already due to the respect they learnt in school. If a boss of mine expected me as a fellow adult to address them as sir/madam they would get a middle finger and a not so polite **** you as I walk out the door.

Supervisor is first name. Everything higher is by their position / rank / title.

Mr whatever or miss whatever as well but it depends on the environment. Some businesses are pretty casual, others not.

Depending on how long and how well my minions have served me and our corporate overlords (praise be unto them) it goes as follows, from most junior to fellow department heads.
    Great Learned Master
    Learned Master
    Benevolent Master
    Master
    Sir
    Chief
    Boss
    Howya

My response is usually, well or what's up???

I'm an independent tree surgeon/horticulturist with the public sector, and no effing way would I lower myself to call any bell end sir or whatever...

It's usually me just nonchalantly saying, to myself ffs wtf does he want...

    Well, what's up???
I'm probably getting paid more than them anyhow, being 23 years up on the high pay scale...

I feel sorry for the younger staff who **** themselves when a suit arrives, which is very rare tbh

Every company I've ever worked in, big or small, everyone uses each other's first names.

I used to work in audit so worked a lot on client sites for very prestigious companies, we would call everyone there by their first names too, right up to CFOs/CEOs.
