Where to place dashcam?

I have a Toyota Corrolla and I want to get a dashcam.

My question is where should I place the camera. Ideally, I would place it behind the rear-view mirror, but there is already a box of tricks located there (see photo).

Any ideas as to where is best place to locate it? I'm assuming that because of wide angle of view, then central location is best. However, this would obviously block my view.

Also, what is the grid on the windscreen just behind the rear-view mirror?

Mine is slightly left of the centre mirror. It is in the field of view slightly but doesn't obstruct anything.
The first few days I had it in my peripheral vision but now I don't even notice it at all (kinda like the mirror).

Just a sunshade I would have thought

AFAIK the grid is for magnifying a toll tag signal.

Edit: Looks like I'm wrong. Thanks biko :D

Unless it is a 2 channel with integral rear view camera, then position it anywhere to the left of the rear view mirror.

i.e where it's not blocking out any of YOUR view that the mirror isn't already blocking.

It turns out you are 100% correct. It's called the third visor frit, and it's to provide shade between the two actual visors.

Also generally the location where the metallic coating on the windscreen isn't applied this it is the best spot for placing toll tags and the like.

Mine is just to the left of the mirror too. Just make sure its on a part of the windscreen that the wipers clear.
