    Hi guys,

Made a post the other day but had no response. I’ve decided I want to return to petrol. I’ll be doing 100km motorway every 2 weeks and between will be town/ city.

The cars I’m looking at are the above, 1.3 Civic and the 1.3 Auris. I know both are relatively good cars but do you guys have opinions? The cars will be between 2010-2012, if it’s an Auris it’ll be mk2 or at least the face lift model of the original.

Common problems, how reliable? I know the Civic will be underpowered but my main thing is reliability. All feedback appreciated!

Civic is bombproof, get a 1.8 and you’ll have the best of both worlds.

The Auris is slightly more comfortable overall and a mk2 (2012 onwards) Auris will be more modern (than a 2005-2012 older shape Covic) in terms of infotainment/touch screen etc if you get the right spec. The newer 2012 Civic is a big step downwards in terms of interior than the model it replaced.

A 1.33 mk2 Auris is a bit of a dead duck too, but is very marginally faster than the Civic and quieter unless you go for the 2012 onwards Civic.

I’d either be looking at a 1.6 Valvematic or 1.8 Hybrid Auris or a 1.8 Civic. For you, I’d probably go Auris.

    Hi Colm,

Thank you so much for the reply! However I’ve made a mistake, I’ll either be getting the mk2 Auris OR the facelift of the original, so 2010-2011. The TR model seems to come with quite a lot of kit (dual climate, stop start, etc etc) so I’d be happy with that either. So I’ll ask too (and hopefully am not being a bother!) but in comparison of the 2010/11 Civic, what’s the equivalent era of Auris like in terms of reliability and such? I imagine pretty good.

I saw this with the 1.6 - https://midulstercars.usedcars.toyota.co.uk/en/used-toyota/Toyota/Auris-Hatchback/16-V-Matic-TR-5dr-u3b87zh I know it’s up North but just an example.

Although I’d have thought the 1.33 being the newer engine would have been more efficient and such! But I’m no expert, hence why I’m here! Again thanks so much. The 1.8 Civic is like trying to find a needle in a haystack lol.

I don’t particularly like the mk1 Auris. The interior is pretty unpleasant IMO. I had a few as company cars.

I’d def have the civic in that case.

Just to add, you should just keep your diesel i30, if it breaks - so be it.

    It won’t though.

I’m having issues with the i30. Possibly injectors or a fuel issue. I know you know a lot about the i30/ Ceed range so I’ll tell you what’s happening and maybe you’d have an idea?

    - car struggles to start in morning, is better if facing downhill. If I’m on a flat or uphill it’ll struggle and once started it’ll chug a bit and if press the accelerator in neutral at start up, I hear a gush of liquid from behind the wheel, this then smooths out the idle, otherwise it can be a bit ‘chuggy’ alongside the Rev count. Only happens for the first start of the day, if I leave it a few hours it’ll then start first time.

    - On takeoff, mainly when engine is at running temp the car stutters and shakes intermittently as if I’m in the wrong gear or something.

    - again intermittently if I come to a stop at lights, the car starts to chug. I can feel the shake and chug when stopped, generally goes away again once on the move.

    - oil level has risen on its own above the F mark by about 3-4mm.. possibly injectors? This has only happened once and I’m keeping an eye on it.

So I’m not sure but all of the above sounds like it’s going to be €€€. I have regularly serviced it, had the clutch changed about 20k ago, tyres are good & the battery. Any ideas? Sorry for another long post but these are all the issues I’m having.

For the sake of selling the i30 on and for clarity you should really get the car looked at.
