Mazda 6 - intermittent issues changing gears

    Hi,

I have a 2017 Mazda 6 2.0l petrol with manual transmission that I bought 2nd hand (in UK) in 2018 (with full RAC check done beforehand). Around this time last year, I started to notice intermittent issues with 1st gear. These would manifest as me being stopped in traffic, traffic starts moving, I clutch in and go to put the stick into 1st but the stick will not go into the slot (or will only partially go in).

It was so occasional that I didn't really notice it as being a recurrent issue for a while but it seemed to become a bit more common and then I started taking notice of it. I reported the issue to my local dealer in Dec 2019 and, by that time, I'd also started noticing some similar issues with 5th with the stick getting stuck at the bottom of the "slot" for 5th or seemingly hitting a block of some sort further up and not going fully in.

The issue doesn't always manifest as a complete refusal to change gear - sometimes the gear changes for 1st and 5th are "merely" sticky/stiff/resistant. The stick goes in but seems to hit a lot of resistance on the way in and needs a bit more force that would normally be needed to complete the action. Suffice to say, at the very least, one wouldn't describe these changes as being smooth.

I've also had the rare issues with Reverse but, to be honest, I find the push-down lock-out mechanism fiddly and it could just be me mucking it up on some of those occasions.

Some days/drives, you wouldn't experience the issues at all and, on another day/drive, you might get multiple issues.

I also note that if the car is stopped in the driveway with engine off and I try going up and down the gearbox (1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1-repeat) then I notice the stick seems to be getting stuck between 3rd and 4th (gears that never give me bother on the move).

I'm in an ongoing process with the dealer trying to get this sorted under warranty. So far transmission fluid has been changed, engine/gearbox mounting re-alignment has been done and gearbox inspection (with no obvious issues but precautionary synchro replacement for 1st and 5th was done anyway). To be fair, some stuff has been attempted but, to date, the correct root-cause/solution has not been found. The issue also has alas not occurred any time the dealer has driven it to try to replicate. I'm driving ~28 years myself and have had nothing like this before.

I'm just wondering if any Mazda 6 owners out there experience anything similar? One thing that seems to come up in Mazda reviews is how great the gearbox is and I'd agree on the days where it's behaving itself. On the other days, it's just so frustrating as I am otherwise quite happy with the car.

Bear in mind that this is a petrol car and the infamous diesel engine issues don't apply just so we don't disappear down that rabbit hole :)
