How do shock sensors work

Going to add a shock sensor to a patio door on my alarm system and while doing some research on the wiring of them I started to wonder about how they work. Does the shock sensor give pulses of 9k4 resistances to the zone input every time the window is tapped and then the alarm panel process the pulses and depending on the gross and pulse settings go's into alarm. Any info would be great just for my own curiosity. Thanks.
