New tab layout Google chrome Android

Not liking the new tab layout on Google Chrome Android, where it groups tabs together, doesn't give the option to open a new tab in a new window when selecting a link on a webpage, any idea how to go back to the old system.

I much prefer the new layout, having quick access to all tabs in a tab group along the bottom. Makes closing pop-ups quicker too.
My issue is that every so often it reverts back to the old tab layout and back again randomly. I haven't checked to see if there's a setting for it.
