Buying a 2012 Toyota Auris car and the owner only has one key. Is it expensive to get a new key with remote locking button?

Start by checking with a Toyota dealer so you have a price to compare with.
Then check with places like Autokey.ie etc

I got a key without buttons for my 2008 Auris a while back, it was €100. From memory they wanted €170 for remote key.

Is it a key type key or a little square box i.e keyless?

Key type, most key providers can make for you. If it's keyless, it has to be got from a dealer (well up to a couple of years ago anyway) and they are €300-€350 IIRC

So you get a new spare key cut (and maybe get some money off the price).

What happens if someone shady has the missing key?

Its very rare thats ever the case. Even my folks who've had their car from new have no idea where the second key is.

When I was working in a dealership we would always delete the missing key from the car memory and then code the new key for this reason. Generally, the key is properly missing though, so this doesn't arise!

It is more unusual to get a second hand car with all it's keys than just one ratty key.

I don't understand why people can't keep the spares safe, considering how much hassle it causes if you loose one but that seems to be a thing with a significant % of the population.

I know people that just have a single key for their car or van.
I couldn't live with the anxiety of not having a spare key.

I'm currently using my spare.. the little one has hidden my other key ( I'm blaming the little one . It's probably me that's put it somewhere stupid)
