Cheapest way to hit horsepower milestones

Might have been done before but a couple of things today have got my brain ticking over.

What’s the cheapest way to hit 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 bhp etc. in a new car these days?

Watched Nobby of this parish’s review of the Fiesta ST earlier, then saw someone local in a new Merc AMG GT 53 four door a couple of hours later.

Fiesta ST is 29k and has 200 bhp, seems reasonable. Google tells me that the Merc is around 200k but only has just over 400 bhp, seems very underwhelming.

So what is the bargain way to hit each milestone? Off the top of my head, Golf R for 300 maybe? Tesla Model 3 Perf for 400?

Edit: similarly, what’s the worse value per bhp?

Best value - stripes, decals, stick-on vents, spoilers, windscreen visor, CB aerials, loads of black smoke from the exhaust, seat positioned so that people can just about see the top of your head through the window, Nurburgring sticker.

    :pac:

Seriously - best way to do it is to buy a powerful car to begin with. There are lots of companies offering the likes of bigger turbos, upgraded intercoolers etc. but a remap usually kicks up the bhp with no further modifications.

Not really what he is talking about to be fair.

A lot easier to achieve in the US I'd imagine with the crazy muscle car power race! They seem to be much cheaper to own than the exotics with similar power figures!

Bhp per tonne would be interesting to know too.
Fiesta does well there too im sure.

Not the cheapest way to get big horsepower plus why have all that horsepower in big brick. I’ve a golf that’ll get to 60 as quick if not quicker.

I’d say it’s an animal I’ve read about it. The question was though cheapest ways to get horse power and someone posted a 90k gbp jeep.

Power to weight is much more important a lotus Elise or s2000 for example could feel every bit as fun as big power bigger car.

At a guess, in terms of pure horsepower per euro figures probably a mercedes, bmw or lexus v8 luxobarge. Some are 400hp for under 5000 euro.

I thought we were talking new cars.

I dont know where you would get 700 bhp for less new.

Power is sort of relative when it comes to getting it for cheap. My Lexus is nearly 400hp and it was sub 6k,if that's what you mean?

I'm sure you could do better, but it'd be a push at under 10k to beat that if we're not including power to weight ratio.

To be honest i missed the new bit :D Im not up on the price of everything new but i would imagine you would do it by buying something powerful and tuning it a little.

Performance seems to come at a cost no matter what car you're looking at. The 200hp Mégane GT was €32k but that's gone now, aside from a 200hp Polo GTI for €34k or a 204hp Golf eHybrid for €37k it gets very expensive, even just 200-300hp range. Same with the Fiesta/Focus ST.

The car itself makes a big difference. A 290hp Leon Cupra is similar performance to a 320hp Mustang but a Cupra is a lot more fun to drive and feels much quicker thanks to the smaller size and lower weight. A year old Cupra would be around €35k which is probably one of the best bang for buck you'll see for performance but if you want a 600hp RS6 it may not be your definition of performance...

A good alternative might be a clean Mk5 GTI, throw a few tasteful mods on it and you shouldn't be breaking the bank like a new car.

They're undeniably savage cars, but a new GTI/R at €48-50k is a lot of money, it really depends on what your budget is.

To get 700+ reliably its gona be cheapest to probably buy an M4 or 5, RS4, RS6 Nissan GTR etc and with just an upgrade of the turbos and remap they seem to all be well capable of 800 bhp on stock engines and gearbox. More than that you talking alot of cash on internals - cars would still be crazy money to buy though

M3P is 490 bhp, so closer to your 500bhp requirement.
