    Evening all,

I’ll be picking up a new car this week and am unsure of what Ievel of scrutiny I need to inspect the car with. Should I be checking fluid levels etc?
Car will be a 202 reg but I’d imagine it’s been sitting in a stock yard of some sorts for a few months.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ha, apologies if it came across that way. Have never bought new before and just want to make sure I’ve all my bases covered.

Cars will be prepped by the garage. Should be all fine unless it's a cowboy operation who generally aren't in business of selling new cars.
Will probably only be a fiver of fuel in it though unless you negotiated a tank.

They dont just roll a car off the boat, stick it in the storage yard then hand you the keys when you buy it. The garage does a PDI (pre delivery inspection) . They check levels, remove transport items (blocks in suspension coils etc) tyre pressures, diagnostic checks etc and then have it ready for you.

i used to work in a car garage the number of people who got excited about car and just drove off was amazing
about a week later they would come back with questions and issues

firstly check all the paperwork especially finance agreement are what you expected before you sign i have heard about trade ins
being left off paperwork, also take all your paperwork out of trade in including your insurance disk and take it off eflow if on

get a test drive and full instruction of how everythign work and get them to pair phones etc
make sure the car is the spec you ordered, very important
Do a good visual inspection of the car and get any issues noted on paperwork to be fixed as you say these cars are stored in stone chip covered yards and then on car transporters
insist car is spotless when you take it - dont take a dirty car
any reputable dealer will expect the above

Done 100s PDIs and fluids, tyre pressures etc were pretty much spot on from factory and everything is checked again in the garage. You could check it but its a bit unnecessary. Maybe check for damage but if there was any transport damage it would have been sent back to be repaired

Checking the spec as ordered is a good tip given by someone already. I'd defo do this, especially an paid extras

Check the reg plates match the logbook, easy mistake to carry around for years.

Might be an obvious one but check the mileage
Some unregistered cars are actually driven as treat drive cars if they're stuck and can easily rack up 200 to 300k. Or some garages get unregistered cars from other garages who have done the above and the selling garage haven't noticed the mileage.

    What car is it?

Definitely this one, I picked up a new car during the week the amount of residue from delivery wrap and customs stickers was ridiculous. I simple said you may bring that back to your cleaner and have him actually clean it not just remove the stickers.

Best of luck with the new car

this is an interesting one - someone near me has just picked up a new BMW - it's debadged and I'm curious as to what it actually is enginewise ... I've run the reg through the usual sites and it keeps coming back as a Ford Focus.

Could well be the data the sites have are wrong but I'm sure when they are taxing it the reg matches. Its a 202 model

It’s almost certainly the plates that are wrong.

Car was probably taxed online before or during collection.

Check any paid extras are there. Heated seats were missed once. Didn't pay for seats but did spend 10 mins looking for a non existent button....

How often are people picking up new cars with the spec missing?

I've read about it here before. Not often, but does happen apparently.

The biggest issue I could see happening is with slight model changes on cars, as sales have weakened a lot of dealers have unregistered stock and are late registering 2019 cars with 2020 plates. If there are slight changes on the 2020 models you may not have them.

Check if the car has the right engine fitted.

I know soneone who drove off in a 30kw Leaf when they had paid for a 24kw.
The Dealer never contacted them so it may well be that someone who paid for a 30kw Leaf drove off with a 24kw Leaf!

Happened a pal of mine in the VAG garage in Limerick. Specced up a new Audi, wanted specific options and colour. Car delivered was the wrong colour and missing a sunroof.

Have never seen someone get the wrong spec car but we always checked the spec when it cames off the truck. I have fitted the wrong plates once or twice

I bought a new 2 litre zetec smax in 2014, got a call from the garage to pick the car up, I noticed some of the extras I ordered were missing, then I copped it was a 1.6 litre base model!, the guarge I ordered it from had gone bust and the order was being handled by another ford garage I had to wait 12 more weeks from the right one!

Speaking from experience, check the tyre pressures. Mine have been way too high on any new car I've bought.

I had the opposite experience with my previous new car. It arrived with heated leather seats and 18" alloys, as opposed to non-heated cloth seats and 17" alloys, much to the confusion of the dealer. Needless to say I didn't complain :)

My relation ordered a car with 4x4. Car arrived, no 4x4 and had to leave the car with the dealer. He is now holding off until next year to get the same car he ordered.
