I am looking to get a laptop for a first year student. Not going to be used for gaming or anything like that.

School work, projects, research, homework etc


I was considering this laptop


Any thoughts or opinions of eMMC v SSD?

eMMC is slower than SSD and is usually of a low capacity in terms of Gb size

it's more like a memory card with some extra features than a hard drive

I'd recommend 128gb as a minimum capacity really, especially if it's Windows

Windows updates can be large requiring a good amount of spare space to download and install and also storage does not work as well if it's full / nearly full

Ssd, no question.

this will slot into that laptop - I have checked.

ram is very cheap at the moment so it's a no-brainer for £15

it's cheaper to do it yourself (easy) than to go up in budget to a laptop that comes with 8gb

Consider second hand. There's plenty of lads working in it that sell machines on adverts for good prices.

Usually have done a bit of repair / upgrading on the systems. Could get a far superior system for 200 than what you are looking at.

that computer is really bad bad cpu bad storage
can you wait until December when better computers are out i was looking at amazon best sellers laptops and they were slow junk
buy used look for intel i5 or amd 3500
amd 4000 is better but no supply in Ireland or uk
and intel is bringing out the 11 as it's new 10 series is too slow compared to amd 4500 or 4700.amd ryzen which you can't buy in Ireland they just sell much slower 3500 ryzen amd cp

You don't need 8GB of ram for Windows. There's a big difference between 'ideal if you have the budget' and 'need'.

4GB is fine for casual use/office/browsing/video. Obviously if you want to have 12 tabs open at once, 8GB is preferable.

Never buy a machine with eMMC unless you've no choice.

4gb is a minimum. Same with the SSD 128gb is a minimum.
