    Hi all,

    Would appreciate some advice.

We badly need to upsize our vehicle due to the arrival of another child.

I have about 15k to spend.

The only real 7 seater options out there in our budget are diesels.

My wife will be driving the car on mainly short trips, ferrying the kids around, locally in Cork city.

There will be a 40odd mile journey every other week.

We would really like the size and space afforded by an Smax and are going to see a 2014 2litre diesel Smax over the weekend.

Are we mad going for diesel.
Are we asking for trouble, and would any trouble be costly???
We will be keeping the car for years, so are not concerned in sell on value

How about a VW Touran petrol?
This is a 2014 1.4 and while it might be a small engine, it could be perfect for what you are describing especially with town driving
I see they actually have a 2015 one for 2k more

Toyota Prius+ might be an option too.
Kia did a 1.6 petrol Carens in the UK too. Zafira Tourer had a 1.4 Turbo petrol as well

    Also the Nissan Qashqai +2
There is actually a 2011 one in Ballincollig
The only thing is, I don't see them listed after a certain year
That seems to be the newest petrol on on Donedeal

    Forgot about the Prius+
That could be a good call especially for town driving

Thanks a mill for the replies. They are extremely helpful.

Just out of curiosity, what is likely to happen if I got a 2litre diesel and drove it like described on regular really short trips with a 40mile journey every other week???

Basically a modern diesel car has a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) fitted which needs to run at high temperatures to burn off the crap that it filters from your exhaust
Short jorneys where the car cannot heat up high enough, and for long enough, will eventually lead to the DPF getting clogged
Here is a website that explains it all quite well
It can still be done, but normally it's better to use the car for long journeys to keep the car from blocking up

Might be worth looking at the UK or up North. Look for Euro 6 engined/2016 and above cars to avoid an expensive NOx charge when importing.
