    I have a 08 golf mk5 1.4TSI 170HP and got a pending error code today P3008 Timing Chain.

Obviously this is a big job but I’m considering replacing it myself as I have had the car from new and only 57k kms on the clock. I was wondering has anyone replaced one of these and are there any pitfalls that I should be aware of.

Ok just a quote from vw dealership to change timing chain, water pump and tensioners of a fixed price of 499 eur (vat and labour included). Was expecting it to be more.

    That's pricey

That doesn’t sound too bad for a main dealer?

I priced parts from motor factors and it came to 300 euro. OEM parts will obviously be more expensive so think it is a good price as there is a lot of labour needed to get at timing chain.. might ring them again tomorrow to make sure

Are you sure they didn't quote you for a timing belt?

No I clarified it was for new timing chain, water pump and tensioner I am going to ring tomorrow and confirm as it seems to good to be true... I am just afraid that there is some catch and will charge me for extras.

Yeah, that's right. The 499 price is for a timing belt and water pump. OP's car has a timing chain. Have seen posts on here before from people where dealers have made the same mistake.

For the chain kit with guides and tensioner, main dealer tou'd be in or around €800, often those 1.4's need the cam variator too as the teeth wear on them, brings it up to around 1200.

That sounds more like the price I was expecting and you are correct it has a timing chain as opposed to a belt. I expect the chain may have jumped a small bit as there is a very small misfire when starting from cold. I know these engines are notorious for issues with the timing chain so have parked it up straight away as I noticed rattle and small misfire.

The job of changing it seems straight forward but there is a lot of parts to be moved so was thinking for 499 I would let the garage do it and sit back and relax but for 800-1200 I think It will be a DIY job.

Will ring the dealer tomorrow just to be 100% sure.

There's a bit of work in stripping them down in all fairness. Might still be one best left to a workshop unless you're a fan of spanners and hardship.

Those engines seem to misfire for about eleven million different reasons, even when they were new so dont be too disappointed to have a bit of a miss even after you put it back together.

There was no misfire before I got the pending error code. It’s also started to eat petrol at the same time so suspect that it is linked and once I set the timing when I change the timing chain it will go away. But as you say there are millions of reasons for them to misfire. Thanks
