Using a Freeview box to record Saorview?

My trusty old Hitachi Freeview box has finally departed this world. Done me about 10 - 12 years so cant complain. It could receive and record both the Freeview (yes, UK terrestrial) and Saorview channels and had a decent EPG.

Im thinking of buying a replacement box in NI so my question is if all boxes bought in NI are capable of receiving and recording the Saorview channels? I think they have to be HD boxes and if Im being honest it would rarely be used for Saorview so its not a deal breaker.

Yes, it would have to be Freeview HD, I had a Panasonic 150 a while ago, I could renumber the channels, got the 7 day EPG but didn't do series link, I set timers and they worked. It was Wi-Fi, Netflix, YouTube nó Irish players, it had freeview play but no use here, a very good unit.

Yes I noticed the series link would work for Freeview but not Saorview.

Would Freeview Play not work here?

No, not available on the net here.

I have 2 Panasonic HD boxes (DMR - PWT 530/DMR- HWT 130) which both record directly from epg but no series link. One is almost 7 years old and the other just over a year old. TBH I do not know of a Freeview HD recorder that has series link for Saorview but both these models are reliable.

The uk channels will be different ie BBC wiil be1 and 101 (JD) and the Irish channels in the 800’s. I can series link the Uk channels but not the Irish ones. No often it happens but if your having the odd problem with Saorview you an watch tv through Freeview. Records two channels at a time.

A quick question on the recording point. I've been used with my previous recorder having a built in hard drive. If I buy a box that records to a USB stick will it still perform the same? Or in other words is there any down side to recording to a USB stick?

Capacity of the stick compared to disk.
With a disk you are unlikely to run out of space.
With a disk you will have visibility of all recordings simultaneously whereas with the sticks you will have to load individually to view. So it is really a matter of convenience in the end.
Read/write speed could be an issue on stick versus built in disk, so if you go with the sticks buy with good read/write speeds. Check the max capacity of the stick that the box can handle.

I have been using a 64 gb stick on a tv in the kitchen to record Corrie and such like, (in sd) for over a year now, no great pressure on the stick, works fine, I just clear viewed recordings every few weeks. It was a stick I had lying about, if I had had to buy i probably would have gone for a HDD. I use a HDD on the main TV and tend to keep recordings longer, films, series, concerts etc.

Thanks for the input guys. Much appreciated.

Im seriously considering this Freeview recorder. It would be mostly the soaps that would be recorded. We got used to recording on the old Hitachi box which has now packed in and the above would be a direct replacement for it.

However for a quarter of the price I could get a combo box ... something like this which has the added advantage of receiving FTA channels obviously. Downside is no series link and no hard drive.
