I had been working as a barber before the pandemic, the shop has since closed down due to covid. Been a barber for 4 years but truth be told my heart wasnt in it the last couple of years. Problem is im 34 now. Dont really want to go back into barbering but unsure what I want to do. Would prefer a job not dealing with the general public everyday to be honest.

So as you can tell im kind of lost. What would you guys do in my position?

    Thanks for any advice

What are your interests? Can you seek work or retrain in a sector that you have a passion for? 34 is no age at all, you’ve another 30 years work ahead if you so try and make it something you enjoy.

Have a look through some of the courses there to see if anything catches your eye. Make sure to read the entry requirements.

Civil Service. Go in as a Clerical Officer and start doing courses and work from there.

Interesting, is that sort of thing difficult to get into?

No it's fairly easy, but it's at limited times and it takes ages. This years competition has sadly passed, but keep an eye out for 2021. You have the potential to end up somewhere very interesting, or not :pac:. There is then well defined career progression if you want it.

Was there a post in here for the one just gone?

Since OP has no idea on a direction that’s really decent advice.

    would you consider an apprenticeship?

do any of your friends have jobs that interest you ?
do you know anyone who could be helpful for accessing a job?

what (if any) businesses on social media do you follow.. perhaps they could be looking for staff?

doing a course as mentioned is a good idea

also would you consider teaching others to barber?

or do mobile barber, or is there a market to teach other people to cut their own hair? (lots of people tried it during the lockdown)

What type of work could you end up doing?

    Are you academic?

You could study this part-time: http://www.openuniversity.edu/courses/qualifications/q64-ast (BSc (Honours) Natural Sciences (Astronomy and Planetary Science))

Thanks for all the replies guys, definitely looking at civil service when it comes around next time if I haven't found something solid by then.

What type of work could you end up doing?

Anything clerical within the civil service. You could end up dealing with hundred year old archives, to doing admin for AGS investigations. You could end up processing the same bit of paperwork over and over again though too.

Is there a lot of competition for these places? Is there any entry requirements?
