Location of ''L'' plates?

I know years ago when people were learning to drive they either had no L plates and put them on for the test or if they had them.
They were generally located on the top left hand corner of the front windscreen on the the top right had side of the rear window.
Now however I see them stuck on bonnets, boots, other side of the window, etc. Even on instructors cars.

Does it matter where you locate your ''L'' plate anymore?

L plates use to be tied to metal bumpers back in the day, I remember this from when I was young. Then came the adhesive ones that stuck to bodywork/bumpers, and then the ones in windscreens.
A lot of cars now have quite small rear windows, and a lot of advice is to not stick L plates in front or rear windscreen as they can obstruct your view.

    Hi,

I have a book written for driving instructors. It gives directions on how to fit brackets on the bumpers to hold the "L" plates. They can then be removed/replaced easily. (All metal back then, no plastic or vinyl)

Can not find it the book at the moment, if I come across it later will post the diagrams.

"L" plates should be placed so that they do not in any way obstruct the drivers vision and are clearly visible to front and rear.

I remember plates that that elastic strings in each corner. Can’t remember what they were made of.

Attach them front and rear so that they are clearly visible. Place where it will not hamper visibility

The ones on bonnets are magnets.
