Variances in speed tests?

Am getting big differences in speed tests, for example:

The Google WiFi app says we just had 232mb download speed whilst speedtest.net says it's just 187mb

Took both on my phone so why the difference?

    There are many possibilities
    • You're connected via WiFi (very likely on your phone) and due to changing distance from the router, changing interference levels and just general variance in how well radio signals travel, it will perform better or worse at different times.
    • Someone else is using the connection, causing the speed delivered to your phone to vary
    • Another app on your phone is using the internet, slowing down the rate going to the speedtest
    • The connection itself has a level of contention, so somewhere along the line between where you are and the speed test server, there is not enough bandwidth to support the demand from you and your neighbours causing it to slow down.
    • You're using mobile data, which will be shared with everyone else using the mast causing it to vary.
    • You're using different test servers, some of which have higher capacity or an easier path between you and the server
