Des tells the story of Dennis Nilsen, who murdered boys and young men in his flat from 1978 to 1983. He was undetected for five years, and it was only when DCI Peter Jay was called to 23 Cranley Gardens on 9 February, 1983, to investigate human fragments of flesh and bone clogging the drains, that the police realised they had a serial killer on their hands. It is told through the prism of three men ? Dennis Nilsen, Detective Chief Inspector Peter Jay and biographer Brian Masters. It will explore how a man like Nilsen was able to prey on the young and vulnerable in 1980s Britain and will not only highlight the police investigation and trial but also the effect of the media coverage on public perceptions of the victims at the time, raising questions of just how far have we really come since then?
The three-part drama, which is based on material from the book Killing For Company by Brian Masters and was developed by Luke Neal and Lewis Arnold, is produced by New Pictures in association with All3Media International and stars David Tennant, Daniel Mays, Jason Watkins, Ron Cook, Faye McKeever, Chanel Cresswell, Barry Ward, Tony Way, Bronagh Waugh, Laurie Kynaston, Ross Anderson, Ben Bailey Smith, Jay Simpson, Silas Carson, Stuart McQuarrie, Jamie Parker, Lex Shrapnel, Gerard Horan, Joel Morris, Jonathan Coy, Amy Booth-Steel, Ken Bones, Andrew Woodall and Amaka Okafor. David Meanti is the series producer, while Lewis Arnold is the director.

Des will premiere on ITV on Monday, September 14 at 9pm. There are three episodes in the miniseries, which will conclude on Wednesday, September 16.

For some reason Nielsen went past me at the time, and I know little about him.

Did anyone read the book the author who was visiting Nelson wrote? Would be interested to read it, wonder if they have it in any of the city or council libraries.

The Library has several copies but your local one might have to order a copy from another library.

Watched it tonight, Tennant had him absolutely spot on. I thought some of the crazy interviews with Des in the tv show were a little over the top but actually no they reflected the real thing exactly.

I don't remember this crime at all in the media growing up.

Watched the first episode last night, Virgin Media One on download.
Found it a hard watch, not because of what Nielsen did, I had read all about it previously but the constant and over the top smoking.
I know that was the era but was there any need for the up close shots of it and the constant smoke filed rooms?
I think there was just one shot of the lead Detective in his car with an up close shot of his cigarette and him flicking the ash out the window. Nothing else.

I noticed that as well. I know some series use smoking at work to emphasise that it was a different era but it was overdone here completely. David Tennant is excellent.

We had family members living in London and I remember them talking about the case when they were home on holidays. My mum was not best pleased as she thought we were too young to hear about such things!!

I remember this case so well even though I was very young. Tennant has him down to an absolute tee. A fantastic performance

Watched episode one on VM1 last Thursday, and Tennet's performance during the first police interview was one of the most gripping pieces of telly I have ever watched.

His blasé manner brought an almost dark humour to the heinous crimes. Looking forward to episode two tonight at 10PM on the same channel.

Yes government press conference pushed Living With Lucy out half an hour.

It's repeated tomorrow night at 11.
