My beloved 2003 Nissan Micra has just failed the NCT for rust on the under carriage ...who do I contact to be repaired? Normal mechanic ?

Did the NCT assessor give an indication as to the extent?

Local mechanic is the first port of call - it might be a replaceable part, but it could be the chassis which is a more expensive fix.

I can't see it being worthwhile putting too much money into the car unfortunately - but if you know and like the car then a few hundred to put it right might be best.

You need to get it on a lift and have someone that knows how to weld take a look. Is it the car structure or a bolt on part of the undercarriage that's corroded. Repair Metal is cheap . Labour is not so cheap.

Is it worth actually spending money on.

It will most likely be the sills towards the rear or maybe behind the rear bumper. Go to your regular mechanic first and get them to assess it. May need a body repair place if your regular mechanic doesn't do that kind of work.

Everything depends on how extensive the rust is, a small hole can be an easy repair, especially if no painting is involved.

If you weigh it up at against buying a replacement car usually it's cheaper repair what you have and know than buy the unknown especially if you're going to replace the old with a similar era car.

Its 2003, there are much nicer places to be, obviously depending on budget but imo it's not worth spending huge money on.

Did they specify welding?. If not you mightn't be too bad. My Accord failed and the welding required would have cost more than the car was worth. Any garage should be able to advise. Just show them the fail sheet and let them check.

Time to scrap. Same thing happened to my wives car. Small bit of rust under the door cill not structural. Told me I needed a weld.

If its rusting in one place it will be rusting in other places, they start sticking screw drivers through rusty areas , they did this to my beloved toyota avensis..

Could be a bit of surface rust

    Wire brush or a grinder

True, first year my Accord failed for rust garage scraped surface rust, put in a couple of bits of filler and repainted, got through then.
